THE SPRING MEETING.

POVERTY BAY TURF CLUB’S RACING. The Spring Meeting yesterday passed oil very successfully. The attendance was not so good as at previous meetings of thia Club, but the times being considered, it was perhaps very satisfactory. The weather was capital, and in this respect nothing better could be wished. The racing was interesting all through, some of the finishes being quite exciting. The officers all worked hard during the day, the genial secretary, Mr Aislabie, having a great deal to do, and doing it well. Messrs Cooper and Barry worked the totalisator. The following is a description of the different events: - MAIDEN PLATE. Of 40 aovs, weight for age—distance! 1$ miles. Winter’s Ariel, syrs, 9 1 (Smith) ... 1 E. C. Smith’s The Moor, aged, 9 1 (Moore) 2 Parsons’ Darnley, 4yia, 9 3 (Keelan) ... 3 Carrington’s Impostor, aged, 91 0 Thomson’s Cairngorm, 4yrs, 9 0 0 Devery’s Myth, 4yrs, 8 11$ 0 Walsh’s Pani, 3yrs, 713 ... 0 Hepburn’.-Cynical, 3yrs, 7 8 ... ... 0 Goldsmith’s Ekatere, Syr*, 91 .. ... 0 The race was an interesting one from start to finish. There was some trouble in startng, but eventually a good brginn ng was made, Impostor leading, with Darnley, Myth, aud Moor close up in that order. The Moor was a bad fourth, and Pani was out of it. The Moor then took the lead, and had the race well in hand just after the mile had been traversed. He increased his lead slightly, and the doubt appeared to be whether he could last. Coming down the straight, the order was Moor, Ariel, and Darnley—the latter’s overweight (61bs) evidently telling heavily. Smith managed his horse well, and Moore seemed to be holding him too cheaply, with the result that Ariel won by a bare head. Moor made a slight swerve just at the post. The others were close up. gTotalisator dividend, £l7 13$, eight being on the winner, SPUING HANDICAP, Of 150 sovs, second horse to receive 25 sovs from the stake—distance, 1$ miles. Gooseman’s Deceiver, aged, 6 12jMye~s) 1 Hepburn’s Audacity, syrs, 75 (Stowe) ... 2 Martin's Silence, aged, 810 (Clifford) ... 3 Hamon’s Nora, Cyrs, 6 8 (Benson) ... 0

Balista and The Moor were scratched. Deceiver got away with the lead, Silence being last. Audacity maintained second place. At the three-quarters, Nora was out of it, and Audacity looked dangerous, whilst Silence was forging up. Just before reaching the straight, Audacity made an effort, Deceiver taking it steadily. Audacity’s rider then resorted to the whip and Siluico was clearly out of it, Nora being nowhere. Stowe made an effort coming down the straight, and the mare gamely res »onded, but the outsider was too much for Mr Hepburn’s representative, and Deceiver finished a length ahead (hands down), and Silence a length and a half in the rear of Audacity, Nora a poor fourth. Dividend, £3 9s, 35 being on the winner. HURDLES HANDICAP, Of 70 sovs, second horse to recsive 10 sovs from the stake—distance, 2 miles. Heron’s Erebus, aged, 9 4 (Ballantyne) ... 1 Martin 8 Kangaroo, aged, 11 13 (Jt'eli) ... 2 Greene’s Bit of Blue, aged, 9 4 (Williams) 3 Parson’s Darnley, 4yrs, 8 7 0 Waake’s Nancy, Gyrs, 9 6 ... ... ... 0 Barry’s Dividend, aged, 9 0 0 Winter’s Ariel, syrs, 87... ... ... 0 Kangaroo led off, Ariel and Bit of Blue being in thereat at the first, jump. Ariel ran off at the corner, clearing the wire fence in grand style. Erebus came to the front at the second hurdle with Kangario and Nancy close up. Darnley aud Bit of Blue then came up in gallant style, the former getting third Kangaroo was taking things coolly, though Williams began to look dangerous with Bit of Bme. Just coming in the straight Etebus, who had been keeping in the background, came up with a rush, and there appeared to be a grand race for second place between Erebus, Darnley, aud Bit of Blue, Kangaroo being allowed a hard win. But the result decided otherwise, and close to the post Eerebus was seen to shout ahead, winning by a head, Bit of Blue a game third, and Darnley dose up, with Nancy nex . The general opinion was that Kangaroo should have won. Dividend, £2 12s.

HACK HURDLES, Of 10 sovs—distance, 1 mile. Zulu, 10 12 (Smith) 1 Tuhua, 9 6 (Keelan) 2 Witch, 94 3 Gipsy (105), Bachelor (9 0), and Fraud (10 1) also started. Zulu led off, Fraud, Ba helor. and Witch next. Gipsy swerved at the first hurdle, and was ouc of it. Zulu fell away again, but came up fast at the mile hurdle. He then drew away aud won easily, there being a good race for second place Bachelor, with Williams on, fell at the last hurdle. Dividend, £2 9s; 104, 38 being on the winner. FLYING HANDICAP, Of 70sovs ; second hor e to receive lOsovs from the stakes. Distance, | mile. Warrington’s Dancing Master, 4yrs, fl 0 1 Enko’s Balista, 4yrs, 712 (patterns) ... 2 Gooseman’s Deceiver, aged, 612 (Myers) 3 Hepburn’s Audacity, syrs, 7 6 0 Hamon’s Fitzjames, syrs, 6 8 0 E. C. Smith’s The Moor, 68 ... ... 0 McNamara’s Pretender, 4y.rs, 6 5 0 McMillan’s Forest Queen, 4yrs,6 0 ... 0 C iptain Winter had a great deal of trouble in getting his horses away, Balista jumping off each time. The mare eventually picked up the running, Deceiver next, aud Audacity close up. Forest Queen (who had previously bolted with the lad on her back) was out of it. Pretender edged up aud took second place, but shortly afterwards got off the course. He was brought on again, but was nftt afterwards in the race. Coming into the straight, the order was Balista, with Audacity second, Katterus using the whip freely, Dancing Master, Audacity, and Deceiver sailing up. Audacity then fell, rolling right over, and Dancing Master was brought up with a tremendous rush, winning a grand race by a head, Deceiver a good tnir4. Dividend Ils; 295, 31 on the winner. HACK RACE. There were fifteen starters, Gipsy winning easily, Harleauin second, and Dot third. Dividend, £23 Ils 8d ; 157, 6 being on the winner. FORCED receiver, 79 (Durston) 1 Audacity, 7 6 (Moore) 2 Impostor, 60 (Goldsmith)... ... ... 3 Pretender, 70 ... ... ... 0 Dancing Master, 72 .••• ••• 0
