BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Borough Council hold its usual meeting on Tuesday night. Present: The Mayor, Crs Whinray, Harding, Joyce, Lucas, Lewis, Dunlop aryj Coleman. THE EIBE BEIGADE. The following letter was received from the Secretary of the Fire Brigade : — The Fire Brigade gave a ball on Friday last for the purpose of raising funds to send a team to Invercargill. I sincerely regret to inform your Council that it was a complete failure. The men with their limited means have faced the matter, and paid every six* pence owing by their unfortunate speculation-, but do feel they must recommend to the Brigade at their next meeting to give up all hopes of sending a team away this year. In regretting its failure I feel it my duty to inform your Council that the men al. though failing the failure keeenly, have ex< pressed to me that they would not mind so much for this, but they do mind, and that very much, the feelings ot their Buperinten. dent. The Committee will advise the Brigade to send back the champion shield without further trouble. It was at first suggested-that the Council should grant £2O, but it was then decided to invite subscriptions from the public for the purpose of sending a team to Invercargill. THE OVEBSEEb’s REPORT. The Road Overseer made his usual report. Mr Knox’s tenders for cart* ing gravel at llfcd per yard had been accepted. PAYMENTS.
CUSTODIAN OF EIRE ENGINE. The following applied for the position of custodian, &c., of the I’ire Brigade plant:—O. Lynch, J. Kenny, C. Grey, J. Sparnon, J. Harding, G. R. Streeter, J. Fletcher, C. W. Butler, E. O’Neil, J. Cavanagh. W. J. Yard16y, R Loader, E. M. Bannister, W. Daly, R. Moore, W. Fox, W. Finch, G. Solvander, H. Loomb, W. Tanner, J. Brown, W. Johnston, J. Talbot, T. Nichol, M. Morgan, C. Teesdale, R. Mooney, T. Morrison. Cr Lewis proposed that Mr Fox ba appointed. He was a steady, hard, working man, and had a complete knowledge of gas engines. Unless they got someone who thoroughly understood a gas engine there would be no end of expense for repairs, etc. Cr Lucas proposed Mr Charles Teesdale, who was a hard-working man with a wife and family to support Mr Coleman nominated Mr Thomas Morrison. He was a good all-round mau, aud had a knowledge of machinery, and was also unemployed at the present time. Cr Joyce proposed Mr John Kenny who was a trustworthy man, and had been a tenant of the Council for many tP years.
Cr Whinray proposed that Mr Nichol be appointed. The voting was as follows ■ For Mr Nichol: Cr Whinray. For Mp Kenny : Crs Lucfjs, Joype, and Hording. For Mr Morrison: Crs Dunlop, Harding, Coleman and Whinray. For Mr Teesdqle; Crs Harding, Lucas, and Joyce. For Mr Fox: Crs Lewis, Harding, aud Joyca Mr T. Morrison was declared appointed to the position. Cr Whinray proposed that the en* gagement date froth that moment. Cr Joyce proposed that on the wmpletion of the arrangements for watering the streets Mr Morrison assume his duties. Cr Coleman proposed that the matter be left in the bands of the Public Works Committee.—Cr Lucas xec-onde3.-woarrieg.
EMPLOYMENT OF DAY LABORERS. Cr Joyce said he had been spoken to by men who had complained of being debarred from obtaining a job on the road. These men were what a member of the Harbor Bo*rs ha 4 called loafers, but he would not like to pall them such. He thought as far as possible any ratepayer who was «n--employed should get a job on the roads. Cr Coleman said the only thing wax that one man could not do as much work $s another. “ *The Overseer said he equalised the work as far as possible, and one 1 man who complained had never came near him to ask for work.
The Mayor proposed that there be a list at the Borough offices, cn which any man wanting work oould have his name put, the Road Overseer to give the preference to married men who had families, and to see that mon who were employed could do a fair day’s work —Carried.
