Mr Theodore Carl Laing quietly departed for fresh fields and pas’ures new by the Melbourne boat on Friday last. Had the young gentleman been wise he would have done this first instead of going bankrupt, out now he is liable to be brought back and be prosecuted.
The copy of dUry posted ijp every week at the Minerva PetroleunfCompa* y’s office is looked for with great interest by the general public 88 well as the shareholders. The rate of progress, 80ft, during the past week, nearly reaches that of the previous week and the well keeps up the reputation of the drdler. The depth on Saturday last was 835 ft with 826 ft of 6 inch pipe inserted. This is the actual result of 14 we<*k t ’ vvork, from which we might fairly deduct two weeks lost in fishing for broken tools—this would give an average of 70ft per week. A new 6 inch cable rope 1200 ft long arrived last week. The rope is not yet required but the Managing Director is not of inat class of men who like waiting for anything, but prefers forestalling requirements. 500 ft of 4| inch pipe is on board the Zealandia now due in Auckland, that ship being 90 days out,

This was decidedly rich; and the prospector's who discovered the promising spot waxed wroth on hearing of the affair, and wrote to Mr Harding about it in order that he might bring it up at tbe meeting of the Board. The members laughed at the smartness of the individual in question, but asserted they could do nothing to help ths prospectors, as U- was t MH »! Br,i MM, finl HrH4 Yitß tiHM<
