FOOTBALL.

THE MAORIS AGAIN BEATEN. London, Nov 1

In the football match Wakefield Trinity v. Maoris, played yesterday, the former scored one try to the Maoris’ nil.

An English cprrespondent, writing just before the native footballers arrived in the old country, says :—The financial success of their tour will possibly depend on the first match. If they beat or make a good fight with a first-class team, public curiosity will be aroused and crowds will flock to see them, especially in the provinces. Londoners do not care for football. Lancashire should be the colonists’ chief battle ground. They’ll draw a far bigger •* gate ” at a small town like Blackburn than they would at the Lords or the Oval. A great mistake has been made in not engaging an English football expert to manage or at least engineer the tour, It would have saved money in the end. Opinions seem to differ widely as lb the merits of the team. A gentleman just heme from Auckland told me that he didn’t believe they would win a single match, whereas two English touris 1 who saw the Maoris play (I think at Chris - church) were tremendously struck with them and pronounce the team equal to tackling even the redoubtable Preston North End.
