OUR FIRST CHEAP GOVERNOR.
The fears which were expressed, that opr first cheap Governor would be like any other class of goods, inferior in accordance with the reduction of price, have been in no wise verified. Earl Onslow, the Governor nominate, is a man whose nomination will cause the greatest respect and approval. He is a nobleman of high rank and large property, which perhaps are not what are considered the best recommendations in this democratic country, but he has also achieved for himself a distingnished position among the rising generation of British statesmen, and has held office in the Ministry. He is 35 years of age, and his titles would almost make a colonial gasp with astonishment. He is the Bight Honorable Sir William Hillier Onslow, Earl of Onslow in the County of Salop, Viscount Cranley, of Cranley, in the County of Surrey, Baron Onslow, of Onslow, County of Salop and of Clanden, County of Surrey, Baron Cranley, of Imbercourt, and a Baronet, Lord High Steward* of Guildford, Knight Commander of Saint Michael and Saint George. He has been a Lord in Waiting to the Queen and Under Secretary of State for the Colonies and for War. He is the only child of the late George Augustus Cranley Onslow Esquire, of Upton House, Alresford, Hampshire, and Mary Harriett Ann, daughter of LieutenantGeneral Ijoftus, and he succeeded his grand uncle, Arthur George Onslow, third Earl of Onslow, who died in 1-870, at the age of 93. Butthough we attach little significance to this long string of titles, Earl Onslow has all the other qualities that should make him a worthy successor of the popular Sir William Jervois. We at any rate seem to have no reason to complain of the choice of Governors that are appointed to preside offer gd.
