FORTHCOMING LOCAL EXHIBITION.

The local Industrial and Art Exhibition which is to be held next week is entitled to more than casual notice. Irrespective of the object for which the Exhibition is to be held, there are a great many reasons why every effort should be made to secure its success. From a utilitarian point of view, a spirit of emulation is always a great factor in industrial progress, and such an Exhibition should not only offer encouragement to producers, but enable each one to judge of what ingenuity his fellow-workers may be capable. Our own little Exhibition should in fact be a very modest copy of the monster show that is now being held in Melbourne, or of the one which it is proposed to hold in Dunedin—the prineipla is the same, but of course the scale is a very modified one, ours being merely a local affair and purposely restricted to that. But for that reason, if for no other, there should be a hearty co-operation in the desired direction. Without this joint effort there can bo no expectation of that success which otherwise cannot fail to attend the undertaking. There is now very little time to make preparations, but good notice has been given, and if anyone is behindhand it will not be through any fault of the Committee. We trust there will be no lack of general interest in regard to the Ezbibibition, and that the affair will be worthy at the district in which it is ta be held.
