D’ceiver 121 b, Audacity 8 3, Fitzjames 79, Dancing Master 7 6 Norah 70, Tregeagle 6 10, Bit of Blue 6 5, Privateer 6 0, Arial 6 0. FLYING HANDICAP. Bit of Blue 10 6, Nancy 10 4, Dividend 912, D trnlev 9 5. Ariel 95, The Moor 90, cairngorm 8 12, Off Color 8 12. NOTES BY “ WILLOW. ” The weights for the Boxing Day Race meeting have been issued, and — well require comment. That anything is difficult to “spot” will ba admitted, but ihtt ev. ry hmg in the shape of weiyht allotted, has been correctly arrived at is open to doubt. Deceiver h?ads the list with 8-4 12!b, and deservedly so, giving Audacity 9ibs, and Fitzjames Ist 3 bs. The two last menti ned are looking remarkably well, and I rather think will, bar accidents, give Mr Sunderland’s new purchase all his work to finish in frout of them Dancing Master 7-st 6 bs i« asked to c ncede 6lbs to Nora^—one of the gamest bit “f scuff that ever ate oats, and certainly the son of Anteios has never done anything to warrant such an assessment of his quality. Tregeagle Ilf. (6 st 10 lbs), not withstanding that the old Fisherman blood courses in his veins, must be he'd ch«ap by the pick of the basket ( it the weights), Bit of Blue. With only 6st olhs to carry, those who have watched this littia wonder mast, and I believe do, look on the money as already awarded. Privateer, Gst is nothing like fit, but his breed ng hardly authorises the handicapper in taking such a liberty with him, even though his recent pe> formaeces do not m irk him as much. Shades of Foul Play and L dy Grey arise! Now to talk seriously, to handicap Ariel at 6st is simply ho di >g out an inducement to the owner to assist in the destroying of hum m life. There is no six stone jockey in New Zeal nd it would be safe to put upon Ariel’s back in this race, and I herewith enter a pro test against such an attempt being made. An insight was given at last meeting, and although nothing more serious occurred than the hanging out of a youngster on a wire fence like jockey garments on a clothes line, something cal ing for special enquiry might have happened. In the Huidle Race Bit of Blue has got top weight with 10st 61b—but nothing certainly, out of the way, as every jumping horse should be able to carry that dose. The owners of the others have nothing to complain of except—and this is the second time I have taken exception—hurdle race riders at the
weights are not to be obtained. In the Flying Handicap the weighting of Dancing Master leads me to believe that some clerical error has occurred. Bst 61b for what ? Surely not for beating a mare thoroughly unfit and a horse that fell. However the dictum has passed and so be it. Deceiver with 84. lO'.b has. I think, a lump the best of Audacity, taking performances (which I claim to be the grounds for handicapping) into consideration. The others in the race call for no special mention—the variation i’i weights as between
them being of no great import. As I started by saying, the winners are difficult to “ spot.” The Secretary of the Wellington Racing Club has had a little quarrel with the Press representatives, from which he has come out second best. On arrival at the course on Saturday the pressmen found their room locked, and on asking the reason the Secretary (Mr Lyon), who was evidently nettled ai the remarks of the morning paper on the lunch provided the previous day, remarked that he wanted no consideration Ironi the press, and hinted that its were only loafing for a free lunch. The pressmen then complained to the stewards, and at a meeting of the latter Mr Lyon expressed his regret at his action towards the press representatives, and it was ordered that the press room be reopened.
