The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE Published every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday Morning.

Tuesday, December 18, 1888.

Be just and fear not; 1 Let all the ends thou aiua’st at be thy country s, Thy God’s, and truth’s.

A BIG CRASH. The news with regard to the Panama Canal will be received with feelings of great regret in this colony, which its success would have so greatly benefited. It has long been known that the Canal promoters have been in sore straits to secure sufficient funds for the continuation of the work, but it was generally believed that a venture in which so much had been staked would not be allowed to cease for want of further desperate effort. That effort has undoubtedly been made, but only to meet with failure. In the face of the conflicting opinions with regard to he work itself it is hard to say whether the crash is not for the best, but our confidence in the man is so great that we believe he would have eventually succeeded if he could only have tided over the present financial difficulty. The failure will strike a heavy blow into the households of hundreds of poor French families, who had so much confidence in the scheme that they had staked in it all their small savings, and much misery must result from the failure. It is hard at present to tell wnat the immediate results will be, but they must be far reaching and of a very distressful nature. The failure will take a place in history as perhaps one of the most interesting events that have occurred towards the close of the nineteenth century.
