H.WKE S BAY JOCKEY CLUB'S BOXING DAY MEETING.

Napier, Thursday. *be Boxing Day Meeting of the Hawke's Bar Jockey Club was held at Hastings. The wether was favorable for racing, though the mening looked very cloudy and threatening, bu the clouds cleared off and the afternoon wa very fine. The fields were unfortunately snail, but although there was only one close fiush during the day all. the other contests wee fairly good. One peculiarity much commuted upon was the fact that the majority ofthose present appeared to belong to the indatria! classes, as, although the grand stand and paddock were poorly patronised, there wts a good attendance outside. This was shown very strongly in the speculation upon tie various races, the inside totalisator only recording £3B for three races, and having no investments upon it afterwards. In striking contrast to this the outside machine put through £3021 during the day, making a total of £3054. The starting, which was done by Mr Dove, was splendid, the field in each event being sent away on remarkably even terms. Better starting has not been seen on the course. The following are the results of the races:— MAIDEN PLATE. Hunter’s Yatterine (Stowe) .. 1 Munn’s Juxial .. .. .. 2 Yatterine jumped off in front, and quickly placed three lengths between herself and Juzial. Coming into the straight the first time round, »he latter ran up to Yatterine’s girths, and they passed the stand in those positions. At the sheds Yatterine was again three lengths in advance, and although Juzial » terms at the back it was only inomenas the leader once more drew away, spite Juzial's challenge in the straight the favourite won hard held by half a length. Time, 2min 59aec. Totalisators—lnside : 2 investors, 1 on the winner; dividend, £1 16s. Outside: 197 investors, 105 on the winner; dividend, £1 13s. CHRISTMAS HANDICAP. Ellis’Lady Florin (Beeves) .. 1 Whisper .. .. .. .. 2 Torea 3 Man Friday also started. The flag fell to a capital start, Man Friday getting slightly the best of it, with Lady Florin next. The i latter soon took command, and passing the stand was three lengths in advance of Man Friday, with Torea next, and Whisper laat Paaaing the sheds Lady Florin had still further increased her advantage, and Whisper had supplanted Torea for the third place. No change took place until rounding the rail* way bend, where all but the leader were under the whip. Entering the straight Whisper, who was responding gamely to her rider’s call, made a desperate endeavour to get on terms with Lady Florin, but it was without avail, M the favourite won rather easily by a length and a half, Whisper beating Torea by two lengths for secend place. Time 1 minute 13 1-5 eec. HANDICAP HURDLE RACE. Ellingham’s Harold (Bedmond) 1 Clyde 2 Premium and Erebus also started. Erebus was first on his legs when the flag fell, and he led to the first hurdle, which he ran round and Harold was first over, followed by Premium and Clyde. The second obstacle was taken in the same order. After getting over Premium took command, but the next jump proved fatal to his chance, for he ran round. This left Harold and Clyde to fight for supremacy, and although Clyde came very fast at the home turn he was never able to oatch up, and Harold passed the post first by a length. Premium and Erebus were distanced. Time, 4min 23 sec. BUMMER HANDICAP, of 175 30Vg. Munn’s Partner (D. Page) .. 1 Hunter’s Lenore (Sweeney) 2 M n’s Waterfall (M’Taggart) .. 3 Mania’s Silence (Vaile) also started. Silence was quickest on his legs, and got a length the best of a good start, with the other three together. Passing the sheds he had a length lead of Wa tex fall, who had Lenore on his girths, and partner lying back last. No alteration took place until entering the straight the first time round, when Partner took third place. Bounding the sheds Partner ran up to Silence, and Lenore passed Wateifall. Silence and Partner ran in company to the railway bend, where the former was beaten. Partner entered the straight with a half-length advantage of Lenore, and having the best of the struggle in the straight he won by a length; Waterfall was three lengths away third. Time, 3min 40 2 sth sec.

TWO-YIAR OLD PLATE. Gollan’s Iphegenia (Reeves) .. 1 Munn's Strephon (M’Taggart) .. 2 Bussell’s Eileen (Whitaker) .. 3 Gollan’s Tirailleur and Puna’s Hukatere alco started. The flag was lowered to a grand start, all the youngsters getting away together. Iphegenia was th* first to show in. front, and she made the pace very hot. Eileen was next, Hukatere third, Strephon fourth, and Tirailleur last. Bounding the turn into the straight Strephon came up with a good rush and gained second position, but he could not catch Iphegenia, who passed the judge’s box a length in front of Strephon, Eileen half a length behind third, Hukatere a capital fourth, and Tirailleur last. BOXING DAY MEETING. This promising Club were hardly dealt with by the Clerk of the Weather on the occasion of their usual Boxing Day meeting, but though the general success was thus greatly interfered with, the results in spite of a misfortune over which man had no control, reflected the greater credit upon the officers. With all the prospects bright and pleasing, success is not so difficult to attain, but it is very different when matters are just the re verse. When the morning opens showery and miserable, and continues so until the races have actually begun, all the arrangements are thoroughly tested, and if those who have con trol of things are not up to their work, sorry results may to a certainty be anticipated. On Boxing Day, however, there was nothing of the kind—the gatekeeper had his probable takings much diminished by the rainy weather, but things generally were as well carried out, and the sport was as good as if there bad been thousands present instead of hundreds; the attendance, indeed, was greater than at the Spring meeting, but of course the large number of Maoris helped to swell the Crowd. Mr Nasmith, the Secretary, is to be congratulated on the success which was achieved under adverse circumstances, and of the officers generally the same must be said. Captain Winter had to exercise much patience in some of the races, but he invariably succeeded well, and Mr Bennett’s decisions gave unqualified satisfaction—though the Hack Bace appeared to those standing off the post to have been a dead heat, the Judge’s decision was immediately accepted. Messrs Barry and Cooper gave every satisfaction in their working of the totalisator. The following sre the results: — MAIDEN PLATE. Hepburn’s Cynical (R. Hepburn) .. .. 1 Carrington’s Impostor .. .. .. 2 Smith’s Myth 3 Won easily. Div., £1 18s. BOXING DAY HANDICAP. Hepburn’s Audacity (B. Hepburn) .. 1 Hamon’s Nora .. .. .. ..2 Parson’s Fitzjames.. .. .. ..3 Won by a head. Div., £5 2s. HANDICAP HURDLE RACE. Smith’s Ariel (R. Smith) .. .. .. 1 Barry’s Dividend .. .. .. .. Darnley came in second, but a protest was made by the owner of Dividend on the ground that Darnley's jockey (Keelan) had struck Dividend over the head with his whip, making him swerve. Keelan was fined £3 and Dividend was awarded second place. FLYING HANDICAP. Hepburn’s Audacity (Harrison) .. .. 1 Carrington’s Impostor 2 Warrington's Dancing Master .. .. 8 Audacity had the race fairly well in hand all through. The Hack Hurdles Handicap was won by Gipsy, Bachelor 2, Tim 3. HACK FLAT. Armstrong s Titbit, 7.11 (Brown), 1; Nina, 8.12, 2; Falcon, 7.10,3. Titbit carried 91b over. Gipsy 9.4, Slynter 9.0, Harlequin 8.0 including 21b over, Luna 8 4—10. b over, Bonus 7.6, Waitangi B.B—lBlbs over, Goldfish 6.12, Conclusion 7.4—61bs over, Duchess 8.2 —lBlbs over, Ka Omaru 8.5-211bs over, Bruiser 6.11—31bs over, Paatai 8.8—291bs over, Witch 6.2 -21ba over, Jemmy 6.0, also started. A number of the hacks broke away from a false start and the boys could not hold them until they had gone a good dis tance round. Titbit got away well, and ! Gipsy rather badly. At the half mile Titbit had a good lead, Nina being in the rear, and it saemed hardly likely that Brown’s mount could etay out till the finish. At the home turn Nina was brought forward grandly by Hopkins and a desperate race resulted, the latter being beaten by a head, Falcon a couple of lengths behind, then Goldfish, followed by Luna. A £ll dividend resulted. FQRCED HANDICAP. Thomson’s Cairngorm (Streeter) .. .. 1 Cynical .. 2 Titbit.. .. .. .. .. .. 3 Div., £1 16s. Cairngorm got away with a lead, Cynical being the last to move. Cairngorm maintained his lead to the finish, winning rather easily. Div., £9 ss. The settling up in connection with the meeting took place at the Waerenga-a-hika hotel last night, when the following payments were made.—

The following are the weights declared for the Karaka races on New Year’s day:— Karaka Handicap : Fitzjames, 810 ; Cairngorm, 710 ; Ariel, 77 ; Dividend, 74 ; Impostor, 72; Off Color, 64; Myth, 60.
