NAPIER “RELIGION.”

This Napier Telegraph has taken a pious turn ot mind, but there is a something in its religion which our mind cannot separate from that taught by the Peoksniffian school. Our contemporary aays Now that the excursion trips to Melbourne, and the Christmas holi days, are over, it is to be hoped that the Union Shipping Company will endeavor to arrange a time-table, and keep to it, that shall prevent for the future their steamers from calling here on Sundays. The Sabbath breaking involved by the large coastal steamers taking in and discharging passengers and cargo on Sundays is not only a scandalous disregard ot the conventionalities observed by English communities, but falls little short of disgraceful. Does the Telegraph know that it is owing to the hypocrisy of the Napier people that Gisborne has to submit to this Sunday work, and that during ths short period of which they are making so much fuss Gisborne has had a grateful respite. We do not wish to deny Napier the comfort that would be derived from a cessation of this Sunday transhipment, but we do think it is the extreme of hypoc.isy for a town like Napier to thus attempt, not to prevent, but to foist the Sundaywork on a small place like Gisborne, simply because it can oiler no effective defence. Anything that we may say is not likely to lead to an alteration of present arrangements, so that we will say less than we might; but we have not yet forgotten that it is owing to the selfish “ religion ” of a section of Napier people that Gisborne has for years had to submit to this transhipment of goods on Sunday.
