With reference to a statement recently made to the effect that the Botomabana would shortly be sent Home for alterations, on enquiry it is found there is no truth whatever in tM report. Ths Botomahana Las always batt • favorite steamer with the public, and oho is Ukaly to be a useful boat in the Australian trade for some time to come. The Union Company have, however, in contemplation several very important additions to their fleet. It was mentioned some months ago that they had on hand a vessel for the Calcutta trade to relieve the Tekapo, and also one for the Melbourne-Fiji trade to relieve the Pukaki and the Hanroto, which have been variously employed in thia trade. These arrangements have been carried out, and the two vessels in question are expected to arrive in the colony about May next. The company anticipate, therefore, having more than sufficient tonnage to overtake any possible spurt in the produce trade to Australia next season. These will be plain vessels, more of the cargo type, and will be of about 2000 and 4000 tons re-
spectively ; but the company have also ' decided to add two large passenger and cargo steamers to their fleet. These are to be 330 ft long by 42ft beam, somewhat larger than the Mararoa, but arranged more after the ‘'American plan, with their accommodation on the upper deck, thus securing the maximum capacity for both paeeengeis and cargo. They will be up to the company’s best standard in speed, accommodation, and general equipment. One is expected to be out in time for next season, and the other will follow after an interval of three or four months. The company, it will be seen, have confidence in the growth of the colony’s trade, and are determined to maintain their reputation for keeping well ahead of its requirements.—Exchange
