GERMANY AND ENGLAND
GOVERNMENT AID TO THE EAST AFRICAN COMPANY. GERMANY AND ENGLAND “ADVANCING HAND IN HAND.” BISMARCK’S STATEMENTS. Berlin, Jan. 27. In the Reichstag Count Herbert Bismarck said that the German Erst African Company had proved a failure, and it was necessary that the Empire should intervene in carrying out the colonisation scheme in East Africa. With that view Captain Wissman had been commissioned to act on behalf of Germany. Prince Bismarck said that Germany would only pursue a colonial policy which was in accord with England, an old historical ally and the greatest colonising power in the world. In carrying out that policy, he continued, Germany and England were advancing hand in hand so far as affected Samoa and Zanzibar. Personally he woe opposed to adding fresh colonies to their possessions, but the locomotive of the Empire had chosen a track its advance upon which it was now impossible to impede, and he disapproved of any delay. Jan. 23. It is considered certain that the East African Company Bill will bo carried in the Reichstag. Prince Bismarck, in the course of a debate on the measure, said that the company would have to be paramount in the matter, as it was impossible for the German Emperor to become u tenant farmer at Zanzibar, Jan. 29. The Times .expresses doubt whether England has approved of Germany’s action in Samoa, and believes that the British Government merely abstained from making official protest.
