A Gisborne man fancied a horse for the Wairoa races, backed him heavily, and sent a collect wire to ths owner urging him to accept. The collect wire so disgusted the owner that he did not do so, and the cheeky one lost more than would cover the cost of hundreds of such wires, The Sydney Referee comes out strongly on boxing matters I—l am extremely sorry to see that W. Smith, the deservedly popular Sydney middleweight, has gone to New Zealand in company with that excitable and unreliable youth, Billy Murphy. In the first plaoe, Murphy is no fit companion for so Clean-handed, white a man as Smith, and in the second, if as I presume, indeed as is said, he has gone to light Harry Laing, he has gone on a fool’s errand, Laing is too heavy and powerful, let alone clever, for Smith to ever hope to knock out, Smith is not a hard hitter, and it will need a very hard hitter to whip the peculiarly crossbred Laing, It is about* 20 to 1 that Laing whips Billy, and should such occur it would lower the clever middleweight's prestige without adding much to Laing’s; seeing that the latter would have at least a stone and two pounds the best of the weights, The step is an ill-advised one, and I am afraid Smith will regret it mure than I do before he has done with Murphy and New Zealand. As to *' going to America," Murphy has been going there any time this five years, and I will believe he has gone whan I see his landing iu 'Frisco announced, Murphy threw away hia American as well as his Australian chances when he made an insulting fool of himself here lately.
