When Mr Walter was examined before the Court, his evidence caused a good deal of surprise. It was generally understood that he was the chief share-owner in the leading journal ; but it now appears from his evidence that he only holds one sixteenth and a half share of the paper, and that the total number of proprietors is about a hundred, Mr Walter exhibited a most lordly ignorance of the details of his connection with the property. He did not know the names of many of his co proprietors, ho did not know whether he was the registered proprietor of the paper, and in fact he had to refer to Mr Soames, his solicitor, for Information on almost all the points concerning which he was examined. It has always been known that there were several other proprietors besides Mr Walter, but it was not supposed they were so many in number. Gossip in journalistic circles used to say that they were nearly all of them old maids. The births, marriages, and deaths column of the leading journal was settled by a former proprietor as a dowry upon his daughter. At the Police Court yesterday Redmond O’Hanlah was brought up on remand on a charge of lunacy. The prisoner, who had been suffering from the effects of drink, having sufficiently recovered, the charge of lunacy against him was withdrawn, and he was ordered to pay £4 15s, expense of treatment, and ss, costs of Court, in default two months’ imprisonment in Napier gaol. At the R.M. Court on Tuesday (before Mr J. Booth, R.M.) judgment was given in the following cases : —W. Adair v. A. W. Croft, claim £2O, plaintiff nonsuited with costs, £2 2s ; J. T. Cassidy v. A. Ward, claim £l6 3s 9d, judgment for £9 18s 9d with costs £3 12s ; H. E. Johnston v. Common, Shelton and Co,, claim £lO 13s, judgment fcr defendant with costs, £1 17s.
