BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Borough Council met on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor (in the Chair), Councillors Joyce, Lucas, Coleman, Whinray, Townley, Lewi?, Taylor, Dunlop, and Hard-

Mr Gilbred, the successful tenderer for sinking an artesian well, wrote stating that the machine could not be transhipped into the large boat at Napier, and that he was compelled to wait for the small steamer, which could go alongside the breakwater.— Received. The Postmaster wrote asking that the trees along the telegraph line to the town boundary ba cut. Cr Whinray considered that the telegraph line should be removed. Representations had been previously made to Mr Bold upon the matter, and he thought some steps should be taken to prevent the trees being disfigured in that way. The Clerk stated that Mr Bold was willing to remove the line on the understanding that the Council bore the expense. On the motion of Cr Townley, seconded by Cr Lewis, it was carried that the Council trim the trees, as requested by the Postmaster. At a later stage a motion by Cr Whinray to the effect that Mr Bold be communicated with on the matter, and stating that the Council were willing to pay halFi he cost of the removal of the telegraph lines, was carried. A letter was received from the Oamam Borough Council asking the co-operation of the Council in endeavoring to get the Go vernment to give effect to the following : •‘That the Government be requested next session to bring in a Bill enabling all public corporations to consolidate their loans with a view of improving publieveredit and obtaining relief from the high rates of interest now being paid.” , The Council agreed to co operate in the

matter, A requisition signed by Messrs Maude, Moore, Wade, ana Erskine, asking that a be placed along Peel Street, was Wj A motion by Cr Lucas that the work be ’' done was lost, and an amendment proposed by Cr Whinray that the matter stand over tDI the estimates were framed, was carried. OVERSEER’S BRPORT. Kerbing: The kerbing on the east si la of Lowe Street has been completed, and the footpath shingled. Owing to my having most of the timber on hand this only cost £9 10s. This completes the kerbing of that block in Lowe Street, with the exception of 2* chains on the west side, from Mr Orr's store to Childers Hoad, This I would recommend your Council to have done, as it will only cost about £9 10s. Concrete tank: This work has been finished for eome time. I would recommend a final payment tor the same, subject to it being passed by the Public Works Committee. Some alterations will be required in the spouting to convey the water to the tank, also a force pump, so as the water can be pumped to the engine at any time, —I would recommend that the reserve be fenced in so as the horse can run loose. This will have to be done or secore the paddock for a term from Captain Tucker. Tarring footpath: This work would have been done yesterday only for the rain. It will cost £l3 7s 63. This includes raising the kerbing and all connected with the work. Stone contract: This work is progressing favorably—about 200 yards have been broken. A progress payment of £l7 is asked for. Although the stones are somewhat large, I would reoommend payment for the above, subject to it being approved of by your Council. Day labor £5 5s as per vouchers. The Inspector was authorised to give notice to occupiers of shops in Gladstone road to have spouting provided on the verandahs where required. It was decided to have the reserve fenced. The Overseer was instructed to get the Turanganui bridge cleaned. PAYMENTS.
