The V.RC. Autum Meeting takes place to-day. when the New Market Handicap will be rum “Buff and Black” in the Napier Evening News tips as follows:— Lochiel 1, Carbine 2, Tradition 3.
Before Sir Harry Atkinson departed by the steamer last night, he was met on the wharf by the Mayor and members of the local bodies. The Mayor warmly thanked the Premier, on behalf of the settlers of the district, for the measures which had been taken by Government in regard to the Te Kooti affair Sir Harry Atkinson expressed his gratification for the way he had been received One thing we seemed to lack was faith in the Government, but perhaps in future we might have a little more of that quality. (Applause.) He had been carefully watching events, and when he saw that Te Kooti’s visit was likely to cause a disturbance he (the Premier) determined to come to Gisborne. He believed the steps that had been taken would satisfy the settlers, and he felt certain that Te Kooti’s power was now completely broken. (Applause.) The natives at Karaka had actually asked that a policeman should be sent there to prevent Te Kooti going there. He hoped the settlers would now be moderate ; for what they had already done the Government would no doubt be attacked by nose who had not a complete knowledge of the subject. He asked the settlers to be moderate and have faith—they eould rest assured that Te Kooti will not be allowed to • nter th s district while he (Sir Harry Atkinsou) was in power, if he thought there were any possibility of danger. On going aboard the launch Str Harry was greeted with three hearty cheers.
