Meat Freezing and Land Speculations.

(Bt “ Puff ”)

The New Zealand Frozen Meat Company propose to build and own ships to carry meat to England I That’ll be rough on the New Zealand shipping Company and Shaw Saville

Yes, and rougher still on the Colonial Unionl

Oh, they won’t care, because they can get rid of their ships as soon as the Frozen Meat Company start, but the direct lines will be hard drived by such competition! It’ll be good for the colony though ! Competition is the soul of business ! Oh yes, if the Frozen Meat Company start a line of their own, freights and charges will go down tremendously, and the growers will get all the fat off their sheep! The Company will probably fix their headquarters at Liverpool! That’s good 1 Liverpool is the centre of the trade in Biver Plate meat, and a company with a million sterling starting to run New Zealand meat there, will soon make a big hole in that business ! It’ll give the New Zealand trade no end of a spurt, both as to quantity and as to prices! The New Zealand farmers must keep up the quality, though 1 They’re letting the sheep go too small 1 That’s a great pity ! They ought to aim at keeping up the good name of New Zealand meat above all things ! But they’ve had one or two bad seasons! This year they ought to raise the meat to the highest standard again and stick to that!

Mr Pearse, a farmer of Dunedin, is establishing a syndicate to procure and float New Zealand properties! I don’t know who Mr Pearse is, and I don’t believe there are any farmers at Dunedin, but any way his syndicate can procure any number of New Zealand properties, on very easy terms, bnt whether they can float them is another question I Property in New Zealand hasn't yet become very floatable I Not yet, but it’s improving! I believe there’s no better speck than to buy up encumbered properties in New' Zealand now! The mortgagees would be glad to part, for they're pretty well screwed up themselves just at present! And the land would be worth half as much again next year as it is to be got for now!

No doubt a smart man, with plenty of cash, coming out to see to it himself, could pick up some splendid bargains! But I don’t think much of this swyndlicate business ! It generally ends in a smash and a row, and brings the colony into discredit 1

Yes, but as long as it pays the promoters, that’s all they care about !
