Evils of Tendering.
An extract which has a peculiar interest in these days, is given below:—The result of the colonial rage for tendering coupled with the farcical colonial bankruptcy law, is to play into the hands of those who can sell a little more cheaply than others because they wind up before the assignee and pay a few shillings in the pound. Those who are unable to compete in tendering because they wish to pay twenty shillings in the pound lose customers, and sometimes get driven into the Bankruptcy Court against their will, As bankruptcies have a slight connection with depressions, the philosophically minded might ba able to trace the share which the rage tot tendering hag upon bad times. A case which occurred the other day bears upon this, A trader who boasted of selling cheaply wrote to his principal creditors and said be would file unless they accepted 5s in the pound. Another trader was in debt to the same persons, and hearing of the offer he objected to its being accepted, pointing out that he oouid not be expected to pay 20s in the pound if he were undersold by $ riyal who, obtained his goods 75 per pent, cheaper. The offer was accepted ' and the second man had tn file. The Ont one remains in business still, and he believes ;n tendering.
