HAWKE’S BAY AUTUMN MEETING. Napier, last night. The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s Autumn Meeting took place to-day, and was well attended considering that there was no holiday in town. All places of business will be closed to-morrow however, when the second day’s racing eventuates. The following are the results :— FREE HANDICAP, of 60 SOVS. 1 mil?, Mr G. Clifferd’s Chudleigh, 7.5, McGrath 1 Mr T. Paratene’s Kariri, 6.8, Lawton 2 Mr G. Hunter’s I.enore, 6.8, Sweeny... 8 —Dauphin, Orwell, Patchwork and Forrester also ran. Escutcheon, Kotuku, Soudan, New York and Van Dieman were scratched. At the fall of the flag Kariri rushed to the front, Chudleigh being the next to get away. Dauphin was left at the post. At the back Kariri st ll led. Chudleigh being next, Lenore 3rd, Forrester 4th, Patchwork sth, Orwell 6th, and Dauphin a long way behind the last In the turn the order was the same with Forrester whipping and Chudleigh going up. Thunderbolt ran off and was also out of the contest. When the back was reached Oddfellow still led, and was going well j Orlando was next, Chemist 3rd and Taikaha last. Oddfellow was never caught by the field and won easily. Time : 5 min 14 seo. Dividend ; Inside, £1 6s ; outside, £2 lie. Harold broke his leg and will have to be destroyed. HAWKE’S BAY CUP, A handicap of 400 sovs ; second horse to receive 50 sovs and the third horse 20 sovs from the stake. Shortly afterwards Salis. bury went to the front, Recluse being next and Foxton 3rd. Salisbury led into the straight at a merry bat. In front of the stand he still had a command, Recluse being second Leopold here went up and raced alongside the leader. Foxton took a prominent position in the turn, and at the back was second, Leopold leading the field and Becluse being handy. In the bend Lady Norah made her effort, but did not reach the leaders. Salisbury and Silence were by this time out of. it altogether. In the straight an excellent race was promised. Leopold was leading and looked like winning but Becluse came up with a rush and 200 yards from home had caught the leader and had the race in his hands, eventually winning. Foxton bsing 3rd, Lady Norah 4th Salisbury sth and Siledce a had last. Dividends, £4 2s and £6 7a. Time. 3 min 6 2 sth sec.
