Mr J. Thompson’s Troubles

RE THAT PROSPEGMVE BONUS. The foilowing is a copy of a fetter from Mr John Thompson, which was read at the last meeting of the Oook County Council ;— Sin,—l still retain and maintain my claim against your council, for service rendered, for prospecting for atone, for which your council advertised a bonus of £5O, and for which I prospected for and reported on, and showed your eeryant that was sent round with me. You will see by various reports I sent into your council the first day I went out, I took him over to North Giaborne, and took him up to the top of hills and showed -him places where shingle and stone could be got. I took him to Waimata, and in a line south of Barker’s hill, we stood there and I gave him the line of majn back reef coming down through. Barker’s bush and Barker’s hill. We where Standing on the same reef near the Waimata when I told him it was the same line of -reef. We went the following day to Barker’s hill; there I also pointed out where ■ toeiv.teii.was.—He- would no* go op ttwvsill,-

neither would he ro into the bush, but went round the foot of the hill, and I pointdc| out to him the different atratas where the stone dips into the north of Barker’s hill. We'also went on to the top of Barker's hill, I porntoS out to hi<n, as far as the eye can reach, the course where the stone was running, and we then came back to the junction. He safdjhe would not explore that place. We then went over to the shingle hills and examined them, and I pointed out to him, where he qhuld get the shingle and stone on the Kaiti side. Sir, ths Chairman and Council granted rpe £2O for valuable service rendered tor the good I had done the district, This wrs outside of the bonus. Tbp bonus of £56 wad tn dispute regarding the quality. Sir and gentlemen, the dispute I should think is fairly settled by this tiipe, as you have used tha stone, and I see that your Cpunpil and Borough Council’were agitating for a tramway to the eaid quarries. Your Engineer also acknowledged the service I rendered, The three quarries, North Gisborne, and the quarry dipping through tha Waimata road, north of Barker’s hill, all these quarries have good access’to them, also the quarry coming down through the bush, south end of Barker's hill. Therefore, Sir and gentlemen, I again apply for the £5O bonus advertised in the paper, to which I think lam duly entitled to,—l remain, <tc,, . John Thompson, Grey Street, No, ITO, P.S,—Sir: I hope a few remarks from me will cause no offence. I am quite certain that the atone from these quarries is quite as hard and- good AS' the stone put on the Patutahi road, T acknowledge that the stone I have found near Gentle Annie Oil Springs, Patu(thi; ii| the best
