The Gisborne Hospital.
At a special meeting of the Hospital Trustees on Wednesday night, the Secretary (Mr H. McKay) wrotel have the honor to submit (1) statement showing estimated and actual receipts and expenditure for the year ending March 81st, 1889, and (2) estimates for the ensuing year. With reference to the first it will be seen that the total revenue for the year has been £lOO7 5s 2d, being nearly £lOO less than the amount anticipated, the falling off being principally in subscriptions. Of the total amount received the local authorities have contributed £2OO, or one-fifth of the whole. Attention may be called to the fact that this contribution does not amount to one-thirty-second of a penny in the £ on the rateable value of the Cook County and Gisborne Borough, which is in round figures — £1,700,000. Allusion is made to this matter, because of the objections made by many to assist in the way of voluntary subscriptions on the grounds that they indirectly contribute through rates. Hence subscriptions are steadily diminishing, and the principle of voluntary support is being gradually undermined, In view of the small sum hitherto required from the local authorities, it is hoped that when the next appeal for subscriptions is made, that there will be, on the grounds stated, a liberal support accorded to the Institution. The estimates submitted for the coming year are framed on the basis of the actual expenditure of the year now closing, - with some slight increases in a few items, and decrease in others. Provision is not made therein for necessary improvements bom time to time recommended, viz., a hot water supply, enlargement of the baths and draining of the grounds. From the BalanceSheet it will be seen that the expenditure for the year has been £972 9s 4d, leaving a credit balance of £34 15s lOd." The following are the estimates of receipts and expenditure as revised and adopted by the Trustee* BSCXITTE'.
. The estimated deficiency being £6OO, it wa resolved to apply to the Charitable Aid Board for £BOO, being half of the amount, the balance being supplemented by Government subsidy. 01 the amount claimed the County contribute, two-thirds and the Borough oneThe amount* received in previous years bom the local authorities are : 1887, £ll6 : 1888, £880; 1889, £2OO.
