FOOTBALL.

The local footballers are beginning to wake up, the sudden change ef the weather being a reminder that the time ie near at band when the merry game must onoe more be in full ewing. Ths members of the Gisborne Club meet next Saturday evening, an earlier period than usual. The Napier footballers have already had preliminary meetings, and Gisborne may expect a warmer team there than they had to contend with last season. At Wairoa lately a meeting was called to form a football club. It was well attended and a strong club was formed. Mr Thomas Parker was elected president, Mr H. Flint was elected vice president, Mr H. Kemp secretary. The Committee decided to at once place the ground in good playing order, and ehortly issue a challenge to the Napier, Gisborne and Mohaka clubs. The season is to be commenced by a scratch match next Saturday. BOWING. The Napier crew to try conclusions with Gisborne arrived on Sunday. They are ae follows :—Stroke, J. Hutchins, 10st 121 b ; No. 3, Missen, 12st 21b ; No. 2, A. Goy, 12sl 41b ; and bow, J. G. Hughes, 9st Sib. A rowing contributor writes to the Hawke’s Bay Herald Hutchins has dons good work in the past, and will stick te it as long as there’s a chip of wood left to row on. He has, however, some faults, the chief being the working of his slide. Missen is a new man to Napier, and will, I think, prove a great acquisition to the crew. He rows a little rough, but gets a splendid commencement, and has plenty of staying power. Guy is the best men in the crew, rows with a fine dash, has a great command over his suds, and is as fresh at ths finish as at the beginning ot a race. Hughes is not rowing nearly so well as he was last year. He is late in getting into the water, and a little too soon out, but both ot these faults he can easily overcome. The orew is on the whole a very good one, and should give a good account of themselves on their return.
