Another correspondent wants to know what has become of the “ Board of Consolation,” but we are ourselves so bored of consolation on oil matters that we neither know nor care further about it. A painful sensation has been caused throughout the borders of Cumberland and Westmoreland by the intelligence tha the Rev. Octavius James, a magistrate for both counties, was burnt to death in his bed at his residence in Clarghyll Hall, near Alston. Mr James a little eccentric In his habits, and was accustomed to sleep in his study, a room to which no one else had access He invariably lighted his own fire and made his bed. About 10 o'clock he retired to rest. An hour later flames were seen issuing from the study. The servants poured water on the flames, but the room could not be entered until between 4 and S o’clock next morning, when the unfortunate gentleman was found lying on his back in bed, charred beyond recognition, and his arms and legs entirely consumed. It was quite evident that he had been suffocated for he had not even moved in bed. Mr James had been reator of Kirkhaugb for nearly half a century, and was a munificent supporter of all local charities. It is conjectured that the fire had been caused by the deceased having placed his firewood too near the grate.
