London, April 3. Mr Dawes, in reply to the strictures of Fair Play, says it is true that the late Sir Wm. Pearce's mortgage of a quarter of a million over the property of the New Zealand Shipping Company, has been transferred to him, but it is untrue that he has any intention of foreclosing. On the contrary, he is resolved to maintain the independence of the Company. Mr 0. B. Strickland will be reinstated as manager, and Mr Tyser will continue to be broker. It is asserted that the Company’s shares had advanced 50 per cent, since Mr Dawes became a DirectorIt is probable that Lord Kintore will succeed the late Sir Thomas Gladstone as Lord Lieutenant of Kintnardshire.
A correspondent writing to the Financial News, defends the Lyttelton and Timaru Harbor Boards from the sweeping condemnation by that journal of the New Zealand Harbor Boards generally.
