Napier News-Notes.

AMATEUR OPERA COMPANY : ADVICE ’ TO GISBORNE PEOPLE. > FIRE BRIGADES—FOOTBALL. [standard special CORRESPONDENT. ’ Napier, last night. The members of the Napier Amateur Opera troupe met to-night to consider the proposal to play the Mikado at Gisborne a t Easter, but as telegrams cannot be sent later than 8 o’clock, I cannot acquaint you with the result, for the morning's issue. The Gisborne correspondent of the Napier News telegraphed down a paragraph bearing on the subject, which appeared in the Standard, and I believe it will have some weight in the decision, though the lateness in bringing the matter forward again will be a main point for consideration, Gisborne people will certainly not regret it if the amateurs make

the trip, for I am rure ths troupe would be able to please those whom they undertook to entertain, Besides, I think Gisborne people have themselves much to gain by cultivating the affinity between the two districts. Your district is coming to be veiy favorably looked upon here, and every little athletic contest that takes place as a rule results in the competitors coming baok highly pleased and having a lot of good things to say about Gisborne people. If the Gisborne people have also an eye to business they will do their best to get the Napier company to go up, try also to make their venture a success, and if it in any way affects the spare coin of the realm, shunt off a few of the travelling shows that sap the p'aee and in some cases tend to demoralise the people. The same correspondent also posted us up in what is being done in regard to fire brigade matters, and more defluite news is awaited with interest.

The papers here are noting the fact that a Gisborne football team is expected down this season, and if your men are not on their fuard they will have “ a warm oup of tea ” io dispose of. But if you have any ■' spirits " to br|ng with yoiq you might succeed in underiiduing our dignity a bit.
