FIBE BRIGADE’S DEMONSTRATION. Those who have taken up the project of holding a big Fire Brigade competition on May 24 are to be complimented on the energy with which the matter has been gone into, and they are deserving of the hearty support and cooperation of every resident in the district. A good opportunity is afforded, and if the matter is energetically worked up, the occasion may be made one of vast importance to the district. There is nothing like “ push,” and every available means should be sought to advertise the district. The new arrangement ought to suit Gisborne far better than that by which our Brigade would be compelled to send a team down to Invercargill, and Gisborne will form a good central place to attract a large number of competitors from all parts of the North Island. A capital beginning has been made, and there is every reason to hope that the project will be brought to 2 most successful issue. It requires the exercise of a good deal of energy on the part of those who have taken the lead in the matter, upon whom much work will devolve, but if they are well backed by the citizens there is not likely to be any complaint upon that point. We hope the citizens will take care that no symptom of apathy on their part will, be allowed to dishearten those who are entering upon the thing in a spirited way, and that the meeting which is to be held will pledge itself to do its best in every way to make the affair as successful as everyone should wish it to be.
