The Proposed Fire Brigade Competition.

A meeting of citizens was held on Thursday evening to discuss the desirability of holding a a Fire Brigade Competition at Gisborne on May 24, and inviting thereto teams from all the Brigades in the North Island.- The Mayor took the chair, and explained the object, and it was resolved : “ That this meeting is of opinion that it is desirable that a competition be held on the 24th of May, and it will do its best to provide the funds.” A general discussion took place, and the following Committee were appointed, with power to add to their number:—Colonel tiimeon,Messrs Dickson, Adair, Crawford, Stevenson. Taylor, M. Hall, Maynard, W. Parnell, Hennessy, Somers, W. O. Skeet, Muir, G. R. Moore, W. Cooper, Humphreys, S. M. Wilson, Graham, Cannon, J. W. Smith, and the members of the County and Borough Councils and Harbor Board. Mr Townley said the amount required for prizes would be about £l5O. On the motion of Mr Stevenson, Mr C. C. Lucas was appointed Secretary to the Committee.

A meeting of the Committee appointed to make arrangements for the proposed Fire Brigade Demonstration on the 24th of May, was held at the Borough Council offices last evening. A number of those interested in the movement attended, and the following were appointed as a Collecting Committee : — Messrs Dickson and Stevenson, South side of Gladstone Road ; Messrs Humphreys and Lewis, North side of Gladstone Road ; Messrs Maynard and Taylor, Palmerston Road ; Messrs Hall and Harding, Childers Road ; Mr S. M. Wilson, Roseland, and Mr Wm. Parnell, and the Hon. Sec. (Mr Lucas) was requested to notify these gentlemen. It was stated that invitations have already been sent to all the Brigades in the North Island asking them to compete. The meeting was then adjourned until Thursday evening next, at the same time and place, when it is particularly requested that all members of the General Committee will attend.
