A Sydney telegram says the winner of the Hawkesbury Handicap was Keith, Plutarch S, Wycombe 3. At the V.R C. Meeting the Hill Handicap was won by Sedition, Dividend 2, and Ginger 3. The April Handicap was won easily by The Charmer, with Cyclops 2, and Paheka 3. Audacity, accompanied by his owner and trainer, left for Auckland on Sunday morning last, by the s.e. Wairarapa, to fulfil his engagements at the approaching A.B.C. Meeting. Audacity is entered for three events, Viz., the Tradesmen’s Plate, Stewards’ Handicap, and Shorts Handicap. May the game little son of Bandwick reward his plucky owner with all winning brackets. All sportsmen in the district will sympathise with Mr W. Bailey in his loss of Herculaneum, both on account of the pecuniary value, and for the sake of the quality of the animal for stud purposes. Herculaneum was by Yattendon—Peeress, the dam having been probably one of the fastest horses produced in New Zealand ; the son therefore representing the best blood prourable. His stock are just commencing to race, and so far they have done remarkably well. At the last local race meeting Mr M. Nasmith’s Luna, by Herculaneum—Maymoon, proved herself to be a wonderfully fast mare, and in our Saturday’s issue we noted that by the last steamer to Napier one of Herculaneum’s progeny had been shipped away, having been disposed of at a satisfactory figure to a Napier trainer. Manton has won in stakes this season, np te ths time of his leaving New Zealand, the sum of £3,213 12s. Peter Osbeck was weighted at list 91b in the Caulfield Hurdles, two miles, on March 23, but he did not start. It is not at all unlikely that Patsy Butler will dispose of bis crack Manton in Australia, that is providing a suitable price be obtained. ** Vigilant," in the Melbourne Sportsman, tips Abercorn, Lochiel, or Clayton to win the Sydney Gold Cup ; Abercorn for choice. At the Lincoln race meeting on March 25, the Australian-bred horse Ringmaster, which was some time ago mysteriously shipped to England, was a starter in the Trial Stakes. He ran nowhere, but it is believed that he was a non-trier. Ringmaster was a good performer on the turf in Australia, and although only a handful, proved himself to be as game as the proverbial pebble. The last time Ringmaster appeared in public in Victoria was when he ran third to Lesbia and The Yeoman in the Geelong Winter Handicap on 6th August 1887, on which occasion he carried 9st 21b. Amongst other races he won the V.A.T.C. Great Foal Stakes, as a two year old ; the Caulfield Guineas, Melbourne Hunt Club Flat Race, V.A.T.C. Hawkesbury Handicap, and the Elsternwick Park Handicap as a three year old, and the A. J C. Place Handicap as a four year old. Ringmaster is by First King from Yardley, and consequently is a full brother to Lonsdale. He is now six years old as age is computed in the colonies. An exchange says The late wins of the popular horse Recluse have brought some reminiscences of his early days into promi nence. Mr Copeland was so disgusted with L the appearance of him—after going to so I much trouble to obtain a good strain of blood I that he offered him to some Maoris next to him for £B. The Maoris would not buy him, they also not liking the look of him. Copeland then offered him to them for eight pigs and even then they would not take him. After he (Recluse) had been broken in he began to improve in appearance greatly, but his owner would have taken £lO then for him, but could not find a purchaser. As he grew older he still grew more shapely, and he was knocking about Hawera fur a long time at £lB till the present owners, Messrs Hearn and Kennedy, secured him, I believe, for that price. It is worth anyone's time to listen to the Maoris cursing their luck for not buying the horse when they had the chance. If Beoluse wins—and it is not impossible—the New Zealand Cup, besides his qther meritorious wins of late, will it not be a strange thing for his owners to ramark—'* That horse Beoluse wae once offered for eight Maori pigs, and could not find a purchaser I "
