SETTLEMENT OF LAND.

In the disposal of the Tauwhareparae block the Harbor Board will do well to watch the current of events, and take as much advantage as possible of the market. No less than 3} million acres of land in the Canterbury Provincial District will be placed in the market by the Government during the next two months. The runs to be offered will comprise a portion of the land within the Midland Railway Company’s area of selection. Possession will be given to the new tenants next year, when, by the expiry of the existing leases, 3-i--million acres will return to the Crown. Of this, however, it is intended to reserve a quarter of a million to be dealt with for small settlement purposes. The sales will take place at Timaru on the 30th May, and at Christchurch on the 4th June. This ought to allow the Harbor Board good time to bring the Tauwhareparae block under the notice of those who are thinking of going in for land, as the disposal of the Canterbury runs is certain to attract Australian buyers. It is gratifying to note the many enquiries that are now being made in this district for lands for the purposes of legitimate settlement, and that settlement is steadily progressing. This is the best indication, we could have of the certain advancement of the district. A Wellington journal states that in a private letter received by a gentleman in that place the writer says that the settlers who arrived in connection with Mr Rees' mission have expressed themselves charmed with the place. We hope that such is the case, and that it will be the means of leading many more substantial and thrifty people to make Poverty Bay their home. Everything now points to a revival of prosperity, and advancement of a permanent nature, untainted by the rash speculative spirit that was a feature in the past.
