TOBOA STEEPLECHASE CLUB EASTER MEETING.
Ths above meeting came off on the Waerengaa*hika course yesterday. The heavy rain of the previous evening caused apprehension as to the weather, but the day turned out beautifully, the atmosphere being clear and bracing, though the cloudy sky in the morning no doubt had the effect of keeping a few people away. The attendance was really good compared with the patronage that has been bestowed on meetings in connection with the older established clubs, the number of ladies being very noticeable. The totaliaator was in charge of Messrs Barry and Cooper, assisted by Mr G. Henderson, and was worked most satisfactorily. The defects which had previously been proved in the machine were remedied, and not a single mistake was made, The Secretary, Mr Aislabie, efficiently carried out the duties pertaining to the position, and everything went off capitally. Captain Winter as usual was completely successful as starter, and all the other officers of the Club did their work well, The first race was the— Flvko Handicap, of 15 sovs,, J-mlle.
Carrington’s Impostor, 7.12, Benson 1 Boyle’s Tit Bit, 8.0, H. Brown .. 2 —Only the two started, one or two unfortunate incidents making the race in one respect a disappointing one, Forest Queen, with 6,8 on her back, broke away first, before the time for starting, and took the boy twice round the course, being on for another round, only that Mr Pritchard laid hold of the bridle. Luna was not ready in time, and had just got out Of tfie saddling paddock when Captain Winter had sent his horses away. Tit Bit led off, bet had only got on hie legs when Impostor •ailed up and gave the other his girths. He then increased hie lead, and on the turn home came away easily and won by three lengths. Mr Nasmith (owner of Luna) was fined £2 on account of the horse being late in the field ; totaliator money ou her w: ■ returned.
Mmphk Hack Seußar, of 5 . v s ,, J -mile. Rhodas’ Mauraoga, J, Cooper.. .. 1 Km.th s Merino, Ready .. .. .. 2 Roe’s Wfiicw .. ~ 3 —H .men’s Batanelia and B i 'ey'. Mavmoon Colt also ran. Beady’s mount took up the lead ai d maintained it for nearly halfway, Katanella second, ■nd May Moon Colt fairly out of it, At halfths horses (bar the iasi one) were in a
bunch, but then Satanella went ahead. The latter had a good lead just when entering the straight, but the other boys had their whips out for a good finish, and a good finish there was. It was clear Maurauga had the race, but Merino came up well, just getting alongside the winner’s girth, with Willow a little more than a length behind, and Batanella a good fourth. Toboa Steeplechase Handicap, of 25 sovs,’ about 3 miles. Carrie’s Darnley, Williams, 10.5 .. 1 Parsons’ Nancy, Reelsn, 9.7 .. .. 2 Smith's Ariel, owner, 11,6 .. .. 3 —Rangitikei (Weston), went off first, Nancy second, Darnley next, and Ariel lying behind. There was a general baulk over the [double jump, Rangitikei Betting the bad example, but all the horses went over the water jump, Ariel being first, Rangitikei next, and the other two lying to the rear. Ariel went over the corner of the post and rails and had to return, allowing the grey a good lead, and Darnley and Nancy coming along together; Ariel of course being a long way behind. At the sod jump the flrat three all baulked, Rangitikei having to go a good way back again. Darnley missed the double hurdles and Nancy then had the lead. On the next round Nancy went off at the sod and gave th others an opportunity to dose up. Ariel wc t c .’i .’lie iy. Rangitikei refusing to go over the double hurdles Darnley went ahead and took the water jump nicely. The grey threw his rider in trying to take the hurdles and was then out of it. Ariel was going beautifully and after clearing the water jump put on fast pace. The three then raced without incident (Ariel making up all his lost ground) until the last jump (the sods) was reached. Ariel rushed up and got over first, the other pair being slow to rise, but Williams was up to his work, and Darnley, with Nancy at his heels, came in grandly, the excitement being great. Darnley and Nancy got level with Ariel and a grand race ensued in the straight, the winner getting in first by half a length, and the same distance separating the other two, Time, 9tmin. Haos Steepmchasx Handicap, of 10 sovs,, about li miles. Finucane’s Roan Bachelor, (11,0) ~ 1 Skipper (9.6) >■ .> >< 2 —Fraud (9.4), also ran. The horses went off at J a slow pace, Bachelor in front and Fraud last, They raced past the stand in a bifbch, all taking ths double jump. Bachelor led over the water jump, Skipper following nicely, but Fraud was true to his objectionable name. Skipper took the lead up to the next jump, but Bachelor made a big gain when crossing the obstacle. A ding-dong race ensued for u short distance, and then Bachelor went first to the sod jump, which he took splendidly, and though Skipper cleared it all right he had no further show against the roan, who came In an easy winner by half a dozen lengths, Fraud threw hia rider (Williams) at the sod jump (the last) and ran away from him. Eabtxb Handicap, of 25 sovs,, 1J miles,
Hamon’s Nora, Smith, 8.2 .. ~ 1 Carrington’s Impostor, (Benson), 7.0 2 Boyle's Tit Bit, Streater, 7.8 ~ 3 —Smith's Ariel, Brown, 7.10; Maher's rilynter, Ready, 612 and McMillan's Forest Queen, 6,5, also started ; New Yoik and the Moor being scratched, Impostor got away well, with Tit Bit and Ariel alongside him, Nora fourth, then Forest Queen and Slynter. They passed the stand -n this order and Slynter then left the Queen, while at the half way round, Nora challenged the leaders, Impostor still in advance, Nearing the straight, Nora had Tit Bit and Ariel, and Benson was forced to use his whip. They came into the straight abreast of each other and a game finish resulted, Nora winning by a head, Tit Bit and Ariel being several lengths behind aud making a good ran for third place. This was a capital race, and concluded satisfactorily a good day’s sport. One peculiar circumstance in connection with the meeting ought to be recorded, showing as it does the unenviable tasks a handicapper has to perforin. A short time b- ck the owner of Darnley communicated with the Press, strongly commenting on the w ght hat had been placed on his horse, and ou .he ground he called for three groans for Vjr Bennett. Ifet the horse won the race ! ai.d the groans were called for after the race had been wou ! TOTALISATOB RESULTS.
