The District Schools.

ANNUAL MEETINGS. GISBORNE SCHOOL. Only about thirty householders attended tbs annual meeting of householders for the election of a Committee for the Gisborne Sohool. Mr DeLautour occupied the ohair. Although one of the Committee, he thought it was in place for him to refer to their work, which had been very satisfactory, and especially so had been the efforts of the Chairman, Mr Johnston. Owing to the small vote for education they had been unable to get a large expenditure, but they must bear in mind that it would soon be absolutely necessary that something be done to give better sohool accommodation. They had now a good arrangement to use the Church of England’s new building, but that will probably hold good for only a year. In a short time be Mt sure they would have to provide admission for 800 children in the Infant department, or else refuse them admission. He attributed the splendid results achieved by Mr Morgan as mainly due to the solid foundation laid in the Infant department under the supervision of Miss Dawson, the late Mrs Bull, and the assistant staff. He thought the residents favored the centralisation of the school work, so that they would no doubt look to the enlarging of the old sohool instead of the construction of side schools. A vote of thanks to ths outgoing Committee was carried on the motion of Mr Bushnell, and then the election of the Committee was proceeded with, as follows Nominee. Proposer. Seconder. Votes. A. Taylor M. Hall A. Gregg .. 88 J. Edwards A. Gregg E. Clements .. 35 C. A. DeLautour W. Morgan H. Bull .. 28 W. Morgan W. L. File M. Hall .. 27 D. Johnston H. Cannon W. L. File .. 28 M. Hall J. Somervell D. Johnston .. 18 J. Somervell G.Humphreys H. Bull .. 17 B. Sheriff A. Taylor M. Hall .. 16 W. L. File D. Johnston G. Wildish .. 10 J. Baker H. Bushnell G.Humphreys .. 6 Messrs Cannon, Lewis, Faram, and Humphreys withdrew. The first seven were elected. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Morgan and his staff, on the motion of Mr J, Somervell, who spoke in highly complimentary terms of the work that had been done and contrasted the willing way in which ths children now went to sohool to what was the case in hie own young days, Mr Stevenson seconded ths motion, and in agreeing with Mr Somervell, also highly complimented the teaohing staff, At a subsequent meeting of the Committee, Mr DeLautour proposed, and Mr Hall seconded, that Mr D. Johnston be re-elected Chairman for the ensuing year. Mr Pieiia was elected secretary,

ORMOND SCHOOL, A meeting of householders in the Ormond district was held on Thursday night, when there was a fair attendance, committee's report. The School Committee of this district has the honor to present the following report of its proceedings for the past twelve months: — The members at the commencement of the year were Messrs Norris (Chairman), Doyle, Hatten, McMillan, Skillioorn, Davis, and Griffen. The seats of Messrs Davis and Griffen became vacant through their non-atten-dance, and Messrs White and Bruce were elected to the vacancies. During the year the Committee has held 19 meetings for the transaction of business. At its first meeting in April, Mr J. D, Harper was appointed Secretary, and the thanks of the Committee are hereby tendered to Mr Harper for the efficient manner in which he has carried out the duties of that office. As you will no doubt have observed this Committee has been energetic in making much needed improvements about the sohool and grounds, amongst which may be mentioned shifting and cleaning tank, removing dividing fence, clearing away poplars, erecting screens to closets, planting trees, raising approach to school ground, erecting horse rail, painting school, rebuilding chimney, and erecting new picket fence in front of school. With regard to the educational advancement of the sohool, the Committee are quite satisfied that the master and his assistants are doing all they can to win success, and are endeavoring to raise the sohool to such a state of efficiency as will enable it to take a prominent position amongst the other schools of the district. Some parents, how. ever, fall very far short of their duties to their children and the school, in that they show no anxiety about their children's education, but allow anything and everything to form an excuse for keeping them at home during sohool hours. Of course it is impossible to raise and keep the school in an efficient state without regular attendance, and this Committee would urge upon the incoming one the great necessity of seconding the efforts of the staff in remedying matters in this direction. The Inspector’s report on the late examination of the sohool will be laid before you, and you will see from it that Mr Hill compliments the staff upon the very great improvement in the school. The accounts as audited show receipts for the year ending 1888 to be £5O 4s 9<l, and the expenditure for the same period £46 4s 2d, leaving a credit balance of £4 0s 7d. G, H. Norris, Chairman. The election of the Committee for the en suing year was then proceeded with, and ttsuited in favor of—J. White, W. F. Hatten, G, Bruce, D. McMillan, J, E. Doyle, A. McKenzie, and A. Skillioorn.
