Napier, last night. The authorities are very dilatory with regard to fixing the date of the execution of Hairs te Peri, who was sentenced to be hanged tor the murders on the East Coast. It is now some time since the man was convicted of the crime, hot nothing has been done by the Chief Justice, Sir James Prendergast, relative to the date on which Halra will pay the penalty of his crime. Mr P, A, F. Birch, Registrar and Sheriff, has returned from Wellington, but says that nothing definite has been arranged or instructions issued with regard to the matter. The News believes that the principal reason why the day has not been fixed is that no man has yet been engaged to hang the Maori, The services of an executioner must certainly be obtained before a day can ba fixed for the execution. The authorities have so far not been able to find a man that would do the work. A stranger from outside the distriot will probably have to be sought, However, no difficulty should be experienced in this connection. Meanwhile the murderer is taking things comparatively easy, and is being attended to regularly hy the Rev. J. Parkinson, of St. Augustine’s, who is gaol chaplain,
