Wbluxgiox, Saturday. The first day’s racing of the Wellington Racing Club's autumn meeting at the Hutt took place yesterday, and was patronised by 600 people. The weather was fine and the racing good throughout. Two good divideads were paid ; in the Maiden Hack Merlin paid £9l 16s, which is the best dividend overpaid in Wellington, and Prudence paid £23 lie. There were only two tickets on Merlin, the owner holding one and a Maori the other. POSEKE HANDICAP. Bristol’s Camomile, 7.10, Powell, 1 ; Hill's Prudence, 6.12, Costello, 2; Martin’s Akatea 7, Poulson, 3. No others started. Camomile was a hot favorite. The start was delayed for some minutes owing to the continued breaking away of Prudence, and when the flag fell he had the best of the start, the favorite being five lengths to the bad. The latter, however, soon made np lost ground, and entered the straight half a length to the good. In the homo run Prudence endeavoured to get up to the leader, but was beaten off by a neck. Akatea was a good third. Time, 1 min 184 sec. Dividend, £1 15s. HANDICAP HURDLES. Pollard's Glencoe, 9.11 (including 71b over) (Tetley) 1; George’s Armourer, 10 0 (Johnston) 2; Freeth’s Right Bower, 8.7 (Walden), Kangaroo (10.0) and Reputation (9.5) also ran. Kangaroo was the favorite in the machine. From a fair start Right Bower cut out the pace, and on passing the stand had a lead of three lengths, with Armonrer last. Rounding the river bend Kangaroo went up to the leader, and Glencoe also got a bit closer. Along the back stretch Right Bower, favored with his light weight, was making the pace. Here Kangaroo gave way to both Armourer and Glencoe, and joined Reputation, who was hopelessly in the rear. At the road Glencoe went to the front, und Armourer also passed Right Bower. The last hurdle was jumped by Glencoe and Armourer togather, and then a slashing race ensued, rlenooe just getting home bj- a bare head, Right Bower a fair third, Kangaroo fourth, and Reputation last. Time, 3m!n 27sec. Dividend, £4 2s.
AUTUMN HANDICAP. Hammond’s Sultan, 9.7 (White), 1; Bristol’s Camomile, 7.6 (including 61b over) (Powell),!; Martin's Salisbury, 7.10 (Vaile), Foxton (7.0), Cupid (7.0), Cyclone (6.13, including 91b over), and Lancer (6 3, ineluding 31b over) also ram Akatea was scratched. Saltan was made the favorite.
From a capital start Cyclone, attended by Camomile, cutout the running, with Salisbury and Cupid at their heels. Then came Sultan and Foxton, Lancer being last, This order was maintained for Antlia, when both Cupid and Sultan dosed up, and at the same time Cyclone fell sway. As the horses swept round the turn into the straight White took Sultan up to Camomile, and Vaile ran Salisbury into a prominent position, but the race was never in doubt, as Sultan, easily disposing of the others, won comfortably by half a length, Salisbury a good third. Than came Cupid, Cyclone, and Foxton, Lancer being last. Time, 2mln l.iseo. Dividend, £2 Bs.
MAIDEN HACK HACK. Merlin!. Ten others ran. Dividend £9l 16s. tradesmen’s handicap. Hill's Prudence, 6.10 (Collello), 1; Bristol’s Camomile, 7.7 (Powell), 2; Kennedy’s Cyclone, 6.9 (Friend), 3. Salisbury (8 3), Cupid (7.7), and Akatea (6.12) also ran. Foxton was scratched. Most of the horses were evenly backed, Cyclone if anything being the favorite. From an even start Camomile went to the front and led the field by a couple of lengths, Cyclone being second, with Salisbury close up. At the top turn Prudence went up to Camomile, and at the distance had him beaten, eventually winning by almost half a length, Cyclone a good third. Time, Imin 32 sec. Dividend, £23 Ils. SELLING RACE. Dennett’s Clyde (£2O), 8.3 (Stowe), 1 j Cave's Solitude (nil), 7.6 (Poulson), 2; McKenzie’s Othello (nil) 7.5 (Reid) 3. Sylph (8.6), Gladstone (8.4), Laundress (7.13) Small Change (7.4), and Bandit (7.5) also ran. Clyde was the favorite. Small Change and Laundress, attended by Othello, raced together for half the distance, when Clyde moved up and at the finish won rather easily. Time, 2min 17eec. Dividend, £2 3s. About £2OOO was put through the machine.
