PREVENTION BETTER THIN CURE.
We are informed that a petition is being sent round for signature in support of the erection of a public house on the Whataupoko side of the river, but we think that whoever is moving in the matter might well save himself the trouble. We have too much faith in the residents on the Whataupoko to believe that they will allow the erection of a public house there, at the present time, while they have the power to prevent it. There are quite enough hotels in the place to satisfy either side for years to come, and the residents of Whataupoko would be guilty of an abuse of their privileges if they permitted the probability of a public house being erected there. There can be nothing urged in its favor, bnt even in the best of hands a great deal could be urged against it. No sensible person requires to be reminded of the evils attending the establishment of public houses in suburbs where they are of no service whatever. A counter-petition has been promptly got up to prevent the threatened danger, and we have no doubt the majority of residents will take a firm stand against the proposal.
