Employment on Harbor Works.

ITO THE EDITOR,!

Snt,—l hear that at the dust meeting of the Harbor Board, a Mr Gray wrote applying for work, on the grounds nt being a married man —a very poor plea in point of common sense, Doss Mr Gray think that the single men should be turned off the works in order to have himself put on ? Or does he think that Mr Thomson or Mr Bioheno would do an unmanly thing by sacking a good single man ? If thia is what he is thinking of. he is as tar out of it as he is in it. Doss Mr Gray think that a married man can do mors wnrk than a single man ? If he does he is again wrong. Poes Mr Grav think that Mr Bicheno wants men for carrying parcels ? Jf so he is still wrong. The overseer has none but the best of men, and, believe me, he is just the man that knows what a man is made of in about an hour at work. I think if I remem bar right tha overseer told the Board that he had on the works the finest set of msn he would wish for, It seems strange to me that the men should be interfered.with ? Does not a single man want a living as well as a married man ? I think, Sir. in conclusion, I may tell Mr Gray that out of 44 men on ths works, there ore eleven single men, end I will say mors, any one of the eleven oan do as much work as Mr Gray, dr a little ths other way, and if om man, married or single, wants another to sink while he fiesta, it is not what Christianity demands,—l am, the., Bingen Man,
