The above Council met on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor, and Crs Dunlop, Lewis, Lucas, Joyce, Taylor, Coleman, Harding, Whinray, and Townley. The Salvation Army wrote asking the Council to erect a lamp outside their hall, as the other places of worship had them. It was decided to reply stating that the lamps which were erected at the respective places of worship were put up at their own cost. Dr Pollen wrote asking the Council's permission to make a stone crossing just opposite his house. He would be willing to pay all the expenses, provided the Council supply him with stone. On the motion of Cr Lewis, seconded by Cr Taylor, the request was granted. Messrs Rees and Day, on behalf of Rewi, wrote claiming the balance due on his horse, which was sold out of the pound ; and stating that Mr Cannon bad refused to pay the amount and also refused to state the balance in hand, and further that if the matter was not settled proceedings would have to be taken. The Clerk stated that be had seen Mr Cannon, who informed him that he was quite willing to pay the balance, provided Mr Day made proper application to him. The Mayor considered that the Council could not take any steps in the matter. It was for the poundkeeper and Mr Day to settle. Cr Coleman moved that Mr Cannon be requested to pay the balance in hand to Messrs Bees and Day. Cr Lucas seconded.—Carried. The Secretary of the Fire Brigade wrote applying for leave to use the plant on the 24th May.—Granted. The Town Clerk, Sydenham, wrote: — I have the honor by direction of the Sydenham Borough Council to respectfully solicit your co-operation in endeavouring to get the Government to give effect to the following resolution of the Council, namely : “ That in the opinion of thia Council it is desirable in the interests of the ralepayers that the Government should endeavour to pass during the next session of Parliament, a Ratepayers' Mutual Insurance Bill, empowering local bodies upon the security of their rates, to insure against loss by fire the properties within their respeotive boundaries.” Decided to ask tor further information. ovbbbeer’s bbpobt. Mr Wilkinson reported as follows: — In accordance with your instructions at last meeting, I have consulted with the County Engineer in reference to the Taruheru Bridge ; we have carefully inspected it together, and I have the honor to submit the fallowing report:—Decking : The decking of the bridge is much worn in places, but we are of opinion that it will last for some time longer with slight repairs. We do not think it advisable to re-cover the present decking, owing to the very uneven surface of the floor.. We would recommend that the swing portion be re-floored throughout, and the weak planks in the other portion of the bridge be renewed. Paint and tar : We would recommend that the whole of the upper structure be painted with two coats of paint, and the lower portions receive one coat of tar. Swing : We would recommend that the pedestals of the wheels on the turn table be bored, and iron fastenings secured to axles of wheels to prevent the wheels dropping off when the swing is raised. If the awing is likely to be used often to admit of small crafts passing to and from the freezing works, we would recommend that the rods be fitted similar to the Turanganui Bridge. — Estimated cost, £ll3 ss. Drains: Mr Hughes, the contractor for clearing out No. 2 drain along Gladstone Road, has completed his contract satisfactorily. I recommend a final payment for the same. Artesian well; This work has been stopped for a few days on account of Mr Gilberd having to get new chains, and a pump made. He is now boring through papa rock, and is down toadepth of 240 feet. I would recommend a progress payment for the above. Stone contract: Mr Morgan has pot made much progress with his contract the last fortnight, owing to the very high tides. Crossings :Mr Gregg, the contractor for making the above crossings in Gladstone Boad, is progressing with his work, and expects to be finished by next meeting. Day labor : £6 16s 61, as per vouchers. ,Cr Joyce proposed, and Cr Harding seconded, that the decking, tarring, and securing of the wheels be done.—Carried. Cr Harding thought the decking should be done by day labor, as with the patching and that a better job of it would he made. Cr Coleman asked why it should not be done in the ordinary way, by contract ? Cr Whinray said it would be difficult to prepare specifications for such work. It was agreed that the work be done by day labor. It was carried that the other portion of -the work be tendered for. i»ccovsTs: TEXDSBa : found.
