Ringmaster, the Australian horse, has scored a big victory this time, having got home first in the Great Northern Handicap at the York Spring Meeting. Mr W. Proffit’a trotting pony Fisherman has accepted for the Handicap Time Trot at the Petane R.O. Queen’s Birthday Meeting.

Messrs Currie and Hogan’s Darnley, and Mr James Smith's Ariel have been nominated for the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase Handicap, of 300 sovs; about 8J miles, to be run on the 20th June, 1889. The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club have received capital nominations for the big steeplechase, the principal event of their winter meeting. The number of horses nominated is nineteen, being three in excess of last year's total.

The Waerenga-a-hika Jockey Club have every reason to congratulate themselves upon the acceptances for the various events to be decided at their meeting on Queen’s Birthday. Out of all the nominations every owner has cried content—barring Mr W. J. Hamon, who has not accepted with Nora—this alone speaks volumes for MrC. D. Bennett’s handicapping, that gentleman having performed his task well, and some close finishes may be looked forward to. Should the weather prove fine the meeting will no doubt prove an attractive one to sportsmen. The privileges will be submitted to auction at 11 a.m. to-day by Messrs Graham, Pitt and Bennett. Mr W. Percival declared the weights for the Takapuna Jockey Club’s Queen’s Birthday Meeting on the 9th inst. In the Birthday Handicap Leorina is top weight with 8.12, whilst Audacity is not far off with 8.3. Tupaki holds the premier position in the Victoria Handicap, with 9.2, and in the same event Audacity has to carry 8.6. “ Plunger ” Benzon, who had such a brief but sensational career on the English turf, and has got mixed up in the London gambling cases, is said to have come in for another very large sum of money. He is a lieutenant of the Royal Berks Yoemanry Cavalry, and recently entertained upwards of 70 of his comrades to dinner at Reading.

Mr Warrington’s name should have appeared as the owner of Dancing Master, instead of Mr Boyle's name.
