son ; Time-Keepers, Messrs W. Morgan, F. T. Morgan, and W. Good; Starter, Mr E. P. Joyce; Hon. Secretary, Mr T. Faram ; Hon. Treasurer, Mr C. 0. Lucas. ■ ! i;c The modest local competition held *t Gisborne every year, this season developed into a much wider affair, and was magnified, into a competition to which ail the Brigades ia the North Island were invited. What originally gave rise to the new departure wae the failure of the Invercargill people to carry out their undertaking to arrange for the annual colonial demonstration being held in that town, and in addition to that' a suggestion from th* Napier Brigades that if a general competition were held in Gisborne they would be glad to oome up and take part in it. The idea was at once taken up with spirit in Gisborne, but the first disappointment was conveyed in a telegram published in the Standabd, that the members of the Napier Brigade had changed their mind. Then from various causes other firemen who were expected could not manage to come; but the Gisborne people had made up their minds that these disappointments would not dishearten them, and that coma what would the object would not ba relinquished. Although it may hardly be in place for us to say so, yet it is just as well said, the Invercargill people might take th* lesson to heart. Of course tbe success of the Gisborne oompetition was in a great measure due to the work of individual* who know how to set about a thing and then see that it is carried out. On Thursday night a torchlight procession took place, headed by ths Garrison Band. The manual engine was nicely decked tor the occasion, and the Dark Town Brigade kept the spectators in roars of laughter. There was .ah enormous crowd out to witness tbe affair, which concluded with a display of fireworks, though the latter fell far short of what was intended, because a lot of fireworks did not arrive by the steamer, The Hawke's Bay, men arrived by the Weka early yesterday morning, and the competition began about 0 o’clock. The day was a beautiful one, and In this respect nothing batter could have been wished for. Th* programme was as follow* 1—
