Maize Growing.
AN EXAMPLE OE LOCAL INDUSTRY. Wrss Mt Charles Scott Abbott, ot Ormond, first decided to go in on a large tools for maize growing, he was laughed at, and in fact some of his friends almost looked upon him os being of unsound mind, The Igqgh is, however, on bis side to-day, and hie foresight is now rewarded by having produced what is in all probability the largest end most luxuriant atop in New Zealand. Mr Abbott had in all about one hundred and twenty five totes of sxoeltent land carefully prepared and planted, with a result which must be pleasing to himself and encouraging to others, the yield being about 15.6PQ bushels. The maitte is now being pulled, the cobs being closely covered from the stem to the apex with corn, It is that to store this, three buildings, 80x6x14 feet, will be required. Two of these are already built, and the other will be put up without delay, Thera it another noticeable feature in the venture, and that is the employment of tabor it entails. During the plant, mg thirteen or fourteen people were constantly engaged, and there are now about twenty, in pulling, stripping, and storing. Any industry which occasions labor must, as a matter of course, materially benefit the district in which it is started, and, as in ell probability a large number qf gattlem throughout the Bay will endeavor to emulate, neit year, Mr Abbott’! success, employment will be afforded to many, That maize can be profitably produced in the Bay has been clearly proved, and as its oultlvatlon is not a matter ot great difficulty it promises, at no vary distant date, to form an impbrtsnt itep; of export. Mr Winter Hamon is associated with Mr Abbott in the venture, but he himself njoduetly elves all the credit to ‘h« , »“«i '
