It wae recently cabled that his famous colt, Donovan, had won the Prince of Wales Stakes *t Leicester, the value of which was 12.000 guineas, and the Brockiesbv Stakes, at Lincoln, it will be remembered, fell to the Duke’s filly, Semolina, a half sister to Donovan, and now Donovan has scooped the great Derby, Th* young and popular peer, who now occupies such a prominent position In turf and social circles in England, has achieved another grand success by the victory of Ayrshire in the Kempton Park Royal Stakes, of 10,000 love., and as Seabreeae ran second the Duke has turned the tables on Lord Calthorpe, whose filly, Seabreeze, It will be remembered, won the Doncaster Bt. Leger last year when Ayrshire started favorite, but got no nearer than sixth, and subsequently beat him again in the valuable Lancashire Plate. Ayrshire, by Hampton— Atalanta, had a great 3-yeay-old parper, as after winning the Rlddlesworth Stakes at Newmarket from bis solitary opponent, Disappointment, he easily won the Two Thousand Guineas on the memorable occasion when Friar’s Balsam started with odds of 3to 1 laid on him, Subsequently he won the Derby, raising his owner’s hopes of carrying off the “ triple crown," a feat that has Only been accomplished by West Australian, Gfadiateur, Lord Lyon and Ormonde, k but he went amiss during the summer months and although he started favorite for the St. Leger he failed to realise the sanguine anticipation. At Manchester he was again defeated by Seabreeze to whom he ran second in the Lancashire Plate worth over £lO,OOO, and on his last appearance as a 3-year-old he won the Tenth Great Foal Stakes at Newmarket. Seabreeze, by Isonomy—St, Marguerite, as a 3-year-old won in addition to the two important stakes above mentioned, the Oaks and the Coronation Stakes at Ascot. Melanion, the third in the Royal Stakes, is also the Duke of Portland's property. He is a 3-year-old, half brother to the winner, by Hermit—Atalanta, and only started once as a 3-year-old, running unplaced in the Lancashire Plate, won by Seabreeze. GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE.
