The Land Court Judge.
As an instance of what may be achieved by ■promptitude of action, the outcome of the proposal to shift Judge Barton is a good lesson. The intention of the Government to shift that gentleman was not known in Gic, borne until Friday, and then there was no definite announcement to that effect, but immediate action was taken to prevent the foolishness of such a course, which, as we stated, meant nullifying nearly all the work that had been done. Mr J. Clark, Chairman County Council, received the following tele, gram from Mr Mitchehon yesterday morn, ing Judge Barton was chosen for Omaha on account of the great importance of the case, but, under the circumstances, other arrangements will now be made to allow Judge Barton to remain in the Gisborne dis. triot,” This ia a high compliment to Judge Barton, and as matters now remain we have reason to be assured that Government will in future thoroughly understand that it any progress is to be made with tha Land Court work in this district, a very different molhod must ba chosen to that of sending a Judge here, and then when he has made a fait start at his work shift him away again, after put ting those interested to a great amount of trouble,
