SYDNEY DESPERADOES.

ANOTHER POLICEMAN SHOT BY BURGLARS. Sydney, June 25. Constable Slater had a desperate struggle with a burglar at an early hour yesterday morning. The burglar was attempting to enter the residence of Mr Justice Stephens when he was caught by the constable. Two accomplices of the burglar immediately came to the rescue of their mate and. a desperate struggle ensued, during which Constable Slater was shot twice in the shoulder. The constable had to relax his hold of the man, who with his accomplices made off. The constable is in a dangerous condition. The burglars have not yet been captured.

On June 2, Constable David Sutherland murdered at Pott's Point, Sydney, by a villain named Jamas Morrison, and the murderer still awaits trial for the horrible deed, of which there is not the shadow of doubt but that he was the perpetrator. After that murder, an agitation was created to have the police armed with revolvers, and a proposal to do so is still under consideration. Tho affray ot which news has just been received will no doubt result in tho Sydney police being instructed to carry arms at night. The impunity ot tho burglars and their oowardiee in this case prove what ruffians have to bo contended with, and the bravery displayed by the constable is a splendid example of the men of which tho service ie composed. It is satisfactory to know that though such scoundrels remain unhung as have been proved to exist in Sydney, there.are on the other side some ot ithe best specimens ot British valor that could be wished tor.
