BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Council met on Tuesday evening. Present : The Mayor (in the chair), Crs Townley, Dunlop, Lewis, Joyce, Taylor, Coleman, Harding, and Whinray. Messrs Reynolds and Bennett wrote directing the attention of the Council to the west Bide of Childers road. Cr Harding presented a petition praying that something be done to the Aberdeen road which is in a very bad state. In reply to Or Lewis the Overseer said there was nothing on the estimates for the work. The work was ordered to be done at a cost not exceeding £lO. Cr Taylor presented a petition with reference to the water table between Disraeli Street and Carnarvon Street, and also with regard to the footpath on the west side of the latter street. The Overseer was instructed to carry out the works, the cost in each ease not exceeding L 5 and LlO respectively. Mr W. Adair wrote asking permission to ereot a hoarding outside his building in Lowe Street, while he was having some repairs done to the building —Granted. BOAD OVERSEER’S REPORT. During the last fortnight the following works have been undertaken Kaiti Road : I have repaired this road from the Turangauui Bridge to the end ot tha wharf. From there to the end of the block yard seaward is impassable. It would be utterly useless for your Council to repair that portion of the road with gravel of any kind without first clearing the mud off, and then it would either have to be pitched with big atones or faacined; then covered with sand or shingle. Childers Road: The broken metal On the road has been covered with beach shingle. A few loads have also been put on Read's Quay, which will be finished as soon as the shingle can be obtained. I would recommend that Childers road west be the first work to ba undertaken by contract this winter. Lowe street: The formation ot the footpath in this street has been done and wants about 40 loads o! shingle to complete it. Carnarvon street; These footpaths are also completed, with the exception of a taw loads of beach shingle. Peel street north : The grass has been taken off the footpath end the water channels cleaned out from Gladstone road to the Taruheru bridge. It would not ba wise to break up the present surface of the footpath on the west side without your Council intend to kerb it. To kerb and shingle this aide from Gladstone Road to Common, Shelton's corner will cost £2B 7s fli. Stone Contract Gladstone Road: Mr Doleman reports his contract completed, I would recommend a final payment of the same, subject to the approval ot the Public Works Committee. Road Scraper: The scraper has been in use two or throe days and reams to answer very well. One man can do as much with it as tour men with the scrapers formerly used, so I thought it advisable to send for the Other one. Artesian Well: Mr Gilbert'!, still boring through paps rook, and is down to a depth ot 400tt. I would aak your Council to make a progress payment ot 50 per cent. Taruheru Bridge : Mr Morrison has commenced his contract for painting and tarring the above bridge. Lytton Road : As your Council do not Intend to form this road I would ask that IS inch pipes be put in, instead of a brick culvert, as all the surplus soil would be required to make up the approaches to tha culvert, as that portion ot the road is very low. Carting: £l3 14s fid; this includes shingling for different streets. Day labor, £l5 Ils fid, as per vouchers. nurtDixo insfectob's nsrotu. MrFinneran and myself have examined the damages dona to Mr Adair's building by the recent earthquake. We found the back wall as intact as the day it was finished. The front parapet (facing Lowe Street) has bulged out two inches from its original position, and is kept there by the gutter joists dropping out of their places and forming an abutment against the brickwork underneath. There is no doubt that tho parapet is too high to meet an earthquake like the one we had yesterday. It will be reduced by Bft, and on five of the principals tie rods will be fixed and the gutter joists raised. Thon, I am sure, there will he no danger, for tha parapot will be then drawn back to its original position. I may state that I was foreman of the works while the building was in the Course of erection, and can assure you that tho damage done can bo easily rectified by the plan Mr Finneran has adopted. The main body of tha building is uninjured, The work will be done at once, 3AYHKNN. The following accounts were passedB. Doletnan, L 37 19s; H, J. Gilbert, L 37 10« • Kennedy t gud Evans, Ls;6s; A. It was decided to call tenders for the works required on Childers Road. The Overseer was instructed to make the crossing at Cobden Street in tbs most suitable place.
