T, Brown, the unsuccessful candidate at Iha recent election for Gunbower, Victoria, baa brought an action against the proprietors pf the Age newspaper claiming £20,000 damagss for an alleged libel published on him steiteg tbs progress Of the election, Mr Brown complained that an article was pub(isbed In the defendants' paper in which he was referred to as *a Roman Catholjc, and that in consequence of the article a number of persons who bad promised to vote for him refrained fom so voting- It was also alleged that the article meant that Mr Brown hypocritically pretended to be a member of the Church of England, whareaa iu trplh he was a member of the Boman Catholic Church, and was opposed to ths maintenance of the Education Act, and was endeavouring to ftbtain a seat in Parliament by lying, tbiaanuy, and deceit,
