Little Diversions.
The Magistrate devoted 15 minutes on Tuesday morning to a judicial enquiry into k couple of pugilistic ’encounters which took place on 'July Ist. The combatants cams forward in pairs, and the first two pleaded “ not guilty." The Magistrate told them they might sit down, but one, conscious of his innocence, preferred to stand until he was discharged. A solicitor was called, and deposed that he knew both parties. He was in Lowe Street talking to party No, J, when isrty No. 2 earye up and called No. 1 a gory, ireadthirsty canine, or words to that effect, he would fight him wherever ho liked, and then told him to take “ that.” “ That," said the witness, was a smack under the eye. No. 1 did take it, but very unkindly, and the result was that the two got considerably mixed Up, and when it could be seen wbq was who, No. 1 was on top 0 ( Nd;" 37 Another witness certified that thia was the oorrect position of affairs at the time ha came upon the scene. There was nothing proved against No. 1, and ha was discharged, No. 2 was fined £2 and costs, or seven dava. He hadn’t ths money, so he elected to take it out, The Magistrals said he would five hire two days in ‘tfllnk it oyer (exeunt fifist pair), The next naif came forward. They pleaded guilty, but the Magistrate wanted to know all about ib and than a Witness was sailed who saw it ail, but knew nothing about .it, except that he was disgusted I It wasn't, a fi s ht at all, ■only a sparring Balch. Result, 20b a picua and ousts. • Ono pugilist was allowed two days to pay the money ; the other pfflled out ‘the Meb, and' instead of giving it to the Clerk, piled it before a solicitor who was sitting at the table, tqutJh to the surprise of fta man of law, who referred him to the proper party,
