V.R.C. STEEPLECHASE MEETING. Melbourne, July 15. The Victoria Racing Club's Grand National Steeplechase Meeting commenced on Saturday last. Appended are the results Grand National Hurdles, a eweepetake of 20 sovs., with 1000 sovs. added, about three mile—Redleaf, 98, 1 ; Corythus, 11.2. Bl The Rhymer, 10 7, 8. Fourteen others started. Time : 5 min 54 secs. GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE. Chbibtchubch, last night. The following are the final payments for' the above event :—Chemist, Orient, Ahua. Secretary, Monte, Daddy Longlegs, Torrent, Gunpowder, Waitangi, Irish King, Preato, Orangeman, Eagle, Panic, and Louis. WELLINGTON R.C. STEEPLECHASE MEETING. Wellington, last night. Tha above meeting took place at tha Hutt Park to-day. The morning broke clear and fine with a bracing northerly breesa, but immediately after the departure of the first train, ths wind changed to the south and the sky clouded up very ominously, tbs temperature at the same time falling considerably. When the saddling bell rang, the weather, though threatening and cold, was still fine. His Excellency the Goverodv was present. The following are the results: — Trial Steeplechase — Defamer, 11.0, (A Ellingham) 1 ; Doctor, 95, 2. Exchange was scratched. Ariel, Madcap, Patriot, Rats,. Stonewall Jackson, Billy, Owhfti, and J.D.K, also started. Detainer and Owhiti were about equal Mvoritea. Ariel went away with the lead, but ran off on the far side, leaving Detamer in front. At the succeeding jumps horse after horse fell or refused, until at last Dafamer was, the only one left in. Doctor was set going, after refusing, and finished second; Defamer cantering the last mile. Dividend, £2 14s. Handicap Hardies- Louie, 10.4, (O'Connor) 1 ) Panic, 9.0, 2 ; Clarice, 88, 8. Orlando, Exchange, and Oceola ware scratched. Kinoraig and Right Bower led for over a Chemist being last. Louis, after lying in a good position all through, want up to the front before the straight was reached, and won cleverly by a length, Olarioe a good third, Dividend, £5 4s. Chemist's exhibibition in this race wae most unaccountable, cither the. horse or his party do not like the Wolllngtoaoaurse, as last year he ran just as badly, after winning at Napier. To.day he' was outpaced throughout, and finished with Orient las', Flying Handicap—Repose, 8 7>-(Holmes) 1 | Rewarewa, 7.5, 2 j Tennyson, 7.6. 8* Strenuous, Cupid, Pretender, Nqatata, Peter, Akatea, and Solitude alec started. After about a dozen false starts, Tennyson and Akatea. got the best of »' eirsggltng start, of which Strenuous got all the worst. Hswatjewa took the lead at the home turn, and' looked like winning easily, but Bepose came very fact in the straight,' and leaving. Rewirews, Wh'o was the favorite, won cleverly by half a length. Dividend, 15e. Ladies' Bracelet, for horees that have never won public money, gentlemen riders, twice round the course—Kahu 1, Obed 3, Nutmeg 8. Wellington Steeplechase — Rossiter,' 9.8, 1 ) Kangaroo, 1010, 2 ; Paulo, 9.5, Sr Ariel aleo started, and again ran off the course, Dividend, £2B 18s.
