The power to drive the cutting knife is derived from a pair of parallel toothed wheels that meet face to face, engaging fully one-third of the teeth at one time. By this mode of obtain ing power the greatest speed is obtained without injury to the heels or bearings, besides the pressure so evenly divided that the wear upon these gear wheels is imperceptible.
