THE LATEST FROM THE HOUSE. fniOM OUB OWN 00BB«S»0NDKNT.] Wellington, last night The business in the House on Monday evening was of a very dull kind. The Seleotors of Lands Revaluation Bill, and Seaman's Aota Amendment Bill were read a eeeond time. The remainder of the sitting wu occupied with consideration, in Committee of the Fire and Marine Insurance Company's Bill. A new clause was added, enabling local companies which insure only own shore* holder’s property, to register as limited liability companies. Yesterday afternoon the sitting was devoted mostly to answering a long list of question* which accumulated while tha Property Assessment Bill was being blocked. F f At the evening sitting the Mercantile Law Amendment Bill, and Criminals Protection Act Amendment Bill were read a second time. The Shipping and Seamen's Act Amendment Bill was passed through Committee. The Fire and Marine Ineurance Company's Bill was read a third time and passed. The Legislative Council yesterday deal with several Bills relating to native matters. The Native Equitable Owners' Act meat Bill was read a second time and referred to tha Native Affairs Committee. The Native Meetings Bill passed through Com* mittec, with amendments. The Waina Order in Council Validation Bill, Ngeruara and Waipiro Further Investigation Bill. Kuramsru Reserve BUI, and Issue of Title Empowering Bill were read a second time. It was reported that Government intended dropping the Property Assessment Bill, bdl Mmietirs declare they intend to pash ii through later on. Judge Ward was examined on Monday be* fore a Select Committee ot the Legislative Council, in reference to Christie's bankruntoe end the correspondence between tho Judea and Colonial Secretary.
A return has been laid on tha table to show the actual cost to the colony of nn* necessary talking done by members, It shows tbs average cost per day of sitting, of Parliment In respect of iteqp, the amount of which depends on ths length ot the session. The items are :—Exira clerks, messengers, fuel, gas, etc., ths total cost per day being £B2. A lump sum is placed on the Estimates for the cost of Hansard foe fourteen weeks; after that the additional cost per dsy for Hansard is £3B. - J Sir' George' Grey intends to propose in committee on tho Property Tax Bill aotne important amendment relating to the taxing of absentees, and also in tha direction of establishing an Income tax. Mr Fulton is anxious to got a promise from the Government that they ’ will undertake to introduce early next seuiou a bill to give effect to the resolution carried on the 17th of July, directing the Government to introduce a bill “ giving power to the people by direct vote at the ballot box to proffih|li the sale of liquor within the district in which they reside.”
