FOOTBALL,.

THE AUCKLAND REPRESENTATIVES'It is feared that the Gisborne footballer* will not be able to raise a team fit to mak* a stand against the Auckland representatives who call in on Friday; but it does seem a half-hearted way of going about things if Gisborne cannot arrange some kind of friendly game for to-morrow afternoon. The boat is expected to be in the Bay in good time, and Mr Dougherty, thaw Gisborne agent of the Union Company, has ’ kindly undertaken to do all he can towards paving the way far the visitors having a good time of it when paeaing through Gisborne. A short time ago there was a lot of talk about bringing the Maori team to Gisborne, but now there is an opportunity tq meet a team that has proved itself to be superior to the natives. Of course no one expects that Gisborne could place in tbe field a team that could meet the Aucklander* on even terms, but those who expect little would not have much cause to be disappointed at a defeat. The Auckland representatives would be under the disadvantage that would be caused by the effects of the voyage, and our ground would be greatly in favor of the local men. There would be very little expense attached, and the only obstacle that appears to be in the way is th* weakness of the local team against the odds. But if such capsiderations hold weight in the circumstances it doe* not speak highly of the stamina of Gisborne footballers. In case of a failure to arrange a match for to-morrow between Gisborne and th* Auckland representatives, the visitor* will be taken up to Captain Tucker’s paddock to enable them to exercise their limbs with kicking practice. TvBANaANUI v. Gtmxasiux. Ml An interesting match is set down tor Saturday next, when the return game will be played between the above teams. Th* first match between these team* wa* a,-' splendid game, the gynmaet* winning bjrk point, after a hard contest. The Gymnasium team for Saturday is as follows Full batik, J. Downs ; three-quarters, G. Staite, Wslu and E. Matthews ; half, F. Teat, 'Dtmoan, and D. Bourke ; forward*: Lysnar, Row)*y ( ' Nazer, E. O'Meara, Crawford, Sherriff, Mopat, and Featon, Emerg. i W, Miller, F. O’Meara, H. Johnston, and P. Matthews.
