POLITICAL NOTES.
THE LATEST FROM THE HOUSE. [Fr.oil ovb own cobbbspondeni.] Wellington, last night. In the House on Monday evening the Premier stated that the Government would not proceed with the Corrupt Practices Bill, Hospital and Charitable Aid Bill, and the Destitute Persons Bill. It was probable also that they would not proceed with the Property Assessment Bill. Mr Ballance thought it was desirable that the House should have an opportunity of expressing its opinion on an amendment to the Property Assessment Bill, of which Sir George Grey had given notice, in the direction of taxing colonial bondholders. He said ths Opposition viewed the proposal with much disapprobation. The Premier viewed Sir George Grey’s proposal as amounting to a desire for repudiation, and he thought that even seriously discussing it would ba injurious to the credit of the colony. Mr Beeves characterised the proposal as monstrous. The proposal was also denounced by Sir John Hall, Mr Downio Stewart, and others, but Sir George Grey protested that a great injustice was being perpetrated on the colony through the foreign bondholders being allowed to go free. Yesterday the Public Works Act Amendment Bill and North Island Trunk Bailway Bill were read a second time. In the Council yesterday the Ngaruru and Waipiro Further Investigation Bill, Land Transfer Bill, and Orinakatea Tiki Empowering Bill were read a third time and passed.
